The recent launch of the Union Train service marks a significant advancement in the UAE’s transportation sector, specifically connecting the capital Abu Dhabi to Dubai. Passengers were welcomed with a multilingual announcement at Mohammed bin Zayed Station, initiating the countdown to the inaugural journey. A digital display at the station showcased a countdown to departure along with the destination, reinforcing the initiative’s aim to enhance connectivity across the Emirates under the theme, “We Create a Future that Enhances Connectivity Between the Emirates.”
A Milestone in Transportation
As of Wednesday, the Union Train service began operating from the newly opened Yalayes Station in Dubai, enabling direct travel to both Abu Dhabi and Fujairah. This station is directly linked to the Dubai Metro’s “Jumeirah Golf Estates” station, greatly improving access for passengers. Ticket prices for the Abu Dhabi–Dubai route start at 39 dirhams for the “comfortable class,” while premium class tickets are priced at 109 dirhams. The journey takes approximately 60 minutes, with the train capable of reaching speeds up to 200 kilometres per hour. The operational schedule includes ten daily departures from Abu Dhabi to Dubai and six from Dubai to Fujairah.

Odra Al-Mansouri, Executive Director of Commercial for Union Railway Services, emphasised that the passenger rail network in the UAE has transitioned from a mere ambition into a national reality within less than five years. This integrated network is designed to meet the needs of passengers, merging comfort and hospitality with the UAE’s distinct spirit. She further stated, “With every new destination added to the network, the benefits of passenger trains extend to more individuals across the UAE, reflecting the vision of our wise leadership.” This accomplishment has substantially strengthened connectivity across various regions of the country.
Enhanced Mobility
Amira Khalifi, Director of Strategy and Growth at Union Railway, highlighted that the Dubai train station is a crucial link between the national railway network and local transport systems. This connection allows greater flexibility for passengers looking to complete their journey using a range of public and private transport options. Importantly, a dedicated pedestrian bridge links the train station to the Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station, ensuring a seamless transition between the Union Train and the Dubai Metro.
Special Prices and Offers
Union Train services offer special rates for specific passenger groups to facilitate travel for families, children, and seniors. Infants under two travel free if seated on a companion’s lap, while children aged two to 17 receive a 50% fare reduction. Senior citizens aged 60 and over benefit from a 20% discount on adult fares.
Modern Amenities
Union Railways has implemented various official channels for ticket purchases, including the “Union Railway” app, which provides options for different fare classes and advanced seat selection. The recent upgrades promise a modern travel experience, including comfortable seating, complimentary Wi-Fi, device charging ports, and designated luggage spaces. Furthermore, premium passengers enjoy additional services that enhance their travel experience.
The Emirati Experience
The first Emirati train captain, Ibrahim Al-Hamadi, expressed his dedication to ensuring passenger safety and adherence to schedule, viewing every journey as an opportunity to positively impact daily life for travellers. Chef Maitha Warsho outlined how the onboard menu celebrates traditional Emirati cuisine while presenting it in a contemporary format. The offerings draw inspiration from local ingredients such as dates, saffron, and Arabic coffee, allowing passengers to savour regional flavours during their journeys.
Integrated Transport Solutions
Passengers who book their tickets through the Union Train app have the option to add a one-day “NOL” ticket for public transport in Dubai, simplifying their travel arrangements. This integration promotes a smooth travel experience from departure to the final destination.
Future Expansion Plans
Union Train services have recorded over 150,000 passengers between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah during its preliminary operational phase. Future expansion plans include new stations in Zayed City, Liwa, and Sharjah, further enhancing connectivity across the Emirates. Projects such as “Hafeet Train” aim to bolster regional ties between the UAE and Oman, supporting the movement of both passengers and cargo.
