UAE Launches Major 170 Billion Dirham Road Development Initiative

On April 22, 2026, UAE’s Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail Al Mazrouei, unveiled an ambitious plan for road and rail expansions, committing a staggering **170 billion dirhams** to enhance the country’s infrastructure. This strategic initiative is set against the backdrop of significant economic growth, reflecting not only the rise in traffic density but also the UAE’s position as one of the top ten global destinations for foreign investment. The comprehensive expansion will increase the number of lanes on federal roads and introduce new railway lines, ultimately aiming for improved traffic efficiency and connectivity across emirates.

Infrastructure Investment to Meet Growing Demand

During the Federal National Council session, Al Mazrouei highlighted that the traffic congestion currently experienced in the country is a direct result of a robust national economy and rapid growth. He emphasized the UAE’s remarkable achievement, noting a 48% rise in foreign direct investment (FDI) expected by 2025, alongside an anticipated economic growth of 5.5%. With 90% of registered vehicles located in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah, the increase in vehicle numbers—between 8% to 10% annually—further underscores the urgent need for this comprehensive infrastructure upgrade supported by the **170 billion dirhams** expansion plan.

Strategic Expansion of Road Networks

In alignment with the government’s commitment to road safety and efficient traffic flow, the Minister outlined an integrated approach focusing on proactive and smart solutions for transport development. The **170 billion dirhams** package contains allocations of 11 billion dirhams for federal road projects, 95 billion dirhams for local road initiatives, and 64 billion dirhams dedicated to the Union Railway projects. This holistic plan aims to expand federal road networks by increasing lane capacity from 19 to 33, which is projected to enhance their efficiency by an impressive 73%.

Details of the Fourth Federal Corridor

Al Mazrouei also provided insights on the development of the fourth federal corridor, which is estimated to cost around 6 billion dirhams. This project will comprise the construction of four overpasses and roughly 120 kilometers of new roadways, accommodating 12 lanes that connect five emirates. This enhancement is expected to elevate traffic capacity to support 360,000 trips daily, further solidifying the UAE’s commitment to creating a modern and efficient transportation framework.

Overall, the **170 billion dirhams** earmarked for road and rail expansions reflect a forward-thinking strategy addressing both immediate needs and future growth. As the UAE continues to enhance its infrastructure, the government’s proactive measures will ensure that the nation remains a leader in transportation and investment confidence.
