UAEs Trailblazing Role in Advancing Polar Research

The UAE is at the forefront of both the South and North Poles, achieving scientific milestones and historic exploratory missions that demonstrate the country’s deep commitment to enhancing scientific knowledge and actively participating in global issues. Through its engagement in scientific research and exploration programs, the UAE contributes to understanding climate change and protecting the environment in innovative ways that transcend traditional boundaries. This strategic move reflects the UAE’s ambitious vision aimed at making a positive impact in the world, whether through international partnerships or scientific advancement.

Expanding Scientific Research Efforts

The UAE continues to strengthen its presence in both the South and North Poles through various exploratory programs and research operations. The UAE officially joined the Antarctic Treaty under Federal Decree No. 165 of 2024, enabling it to participate in advisory meetings and submit national research proposals. This step enhances the country’s role in environmental and climate change research through advanced partnerships with global agencies. The UAE also issued Decree No. 164 to join the Arctic Council as an observer, contributing to the dialogue on scientific and environmental issues in those regions.

Innovative Exploratory Missions

Last February marked an unprecedented scientific achievement for the UAE, with an Emirati team collaborating with the Bulgarian Institute for Polar Research on the first joint mission to Antarctica. The specialized team in meteorology and earthquake monitoring installed two advanced weather and seismic observation stations, allowing for the collection of valuable data that enhances weather prediction models. In November, the Bulgarian research vessel set sail from Varna, where the UAE participated for the second consecutive year in this research program, reflecting the country’s deep commitment to its polar initiatives.

Historic Individual Achievements

The UAE’s achievements extend beyond scientific research, with the country also recording notable national figures in inspiring exploratory journeys. This January, Fatima Abdulrahman Al Awadhi (18 years old) became the youngest Arab to reach the summit of Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica. In addition, Emirati explorer Ibrahim Sharaf Al Hashimi participated in the first circular flight around Antarctica, highlighting the UAE’s accomplishments in the polar desert environment.

A Bright Future for Polar Exploration

The UAE is enthusiastically looking toward the future, having signed memoranda of understanding with Argentina and New Zealand to enhance cooperation in Antarctic research and exchange academic expertise that supports its efforts to tackle climate challenges. In collaboration with Finland, a memorandum of understanding was signed with the National Center of Meteorology to bolster polar research efforts, contributing to the establishment of a strategic partnership characterized by innovation and in-depth analysis in the field of meteorology.

The UAE embodies great aspirations and perseverance in facing challenges through its scientific achievements and historic exploratory missions at the heart of both the South and North Poles. By showcasing the accomplishments of prominent individuals such as Abdullah Al Hababi, who became the first Emirati to reach both poles, the country recognizes that challenges can be overcome with determination and strong will. The UAE’s journey to the poles reflects its unwavering commitment to scientific exploration and the pursuit of knowledge, enriching humanity through a deeper understanding of climate change.
