UAE Launches Innovative Clinical Trial Aiming to Prevent Alzheimer’s

In an innovative move to enhance public health, the UAE has launched its first clinical trial for the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease, marking a significant milestone in the field of precision medicine and preventive healthcare. This trial, managed by Insights Research and Solutions “Airos” in collaboration with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi and the American company “Halia Therapeutics,” aims to utilize genomics to reduce the risks of this disease that affects millions of people worldwide. This initiative is part of the UAE’s efforts to expand clinical research related to Alzheimer’s, specifically by leveraging available genetic data.

Collaboration to Implement the Trial

This trial represents the outcome of effective collaboration among several entities, with “Airos” operating under the umbrella of “M42 Group” and actively contributing alongside the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi and “Halia Therapeutics” in developing medical interventions based on genetic data. The research focuses on identifying individuals eligible to participate in the study before the onset of symptoms, benefiting from the genetic data of the UAE Genome Program.

The Importance of the Trial in Combating Alzheimer’s

The study aims to evaluate the investigational treatment HT-4253 among participants with the APOE4 genetic variant, which is considered one of the primary risk factors for developing Alzheimer’s. This initiative comes at a time when the world is witnessing a rise in cases of the disease, with estimates suggesting that the number of affected individuals could reach 155 million by 2050. By achieving early interventions, researchers hope to reduce the negative impacts of this disease on individuals and society as a whole.

Future Prospects for Clinical Research

The trial is based on the UAE Genome Program, which has completed the sequencing of over 900,000 genomes, making it one of the largest genomic resources globally. By linking genomic data with clinical data through the “Malafi” platform, the initiative aims to enhance the potential for conducting precise and proactive research in the field of precision medicine. The organizers of the trial emphasize that these steps are part of a broader vision to build a healthcare system based on genetic data in the UAE.

Transforming Research into Practical Applications

Dr. Noora Khamees Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, noted that these trials represent a practical application of the values of the UAE Genome Program as a strategic resource in the field of research. She emphasized the importance of utilizing genetic information to design medical interventions tailored to each individual’s genetic makeup to ensure the best possible outcomes. These strategies aim not only to improve public health but also to enhance quality of life and expand global understanding of diseases.

Albaraa Alkhani, Chief Operations Officer at Integrated Health Solutions of M42, highlighted the role that genetic data plays in enhancing research and clinical participation. He affirmed that the combination of genetic datasets and investigational treatments could establish Abu Dhabi as a global hub for precision medicine.

This trial is a bold step towards a deeper understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and opens new horizons in the fields of medicine and genetic research. As the UAE aims to be at the forefront of developments in this area, all eyes are on the results that this pioneering trial will achieve.
