On August 4, 2026, it was reported that the UAE has taken significant strides in combatting environmental crimes through its leadership in the international initiative “Green Shield 2026.” This effort, developed in collaboration with five South American countries, has resulted in the execution of over 1,000 operations aimed at protecting the vital ecosystems of the Amazon region.
UAE’s Commitment to Environmental Protection
His Highness Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, emphasised that the UAE’s initiatives are rooted in a vision to enhance international cooperation to tackle borderless challenges. He stated, “Continuing our global efforts to protect the environment is integral to our mission.” The UAE launched the International Initiative for Law Enforcement for Climate (I2LEC) in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in 2023, highlighting the nation’s commitment to enforce laws that safeguard the climate.
Operation Green Shield 2026 in Action
In response to a growing international demand for coordinated enforcement efforts against environmental crimes, the UAE spearheaded “Operation Green Shield 2026” which commenced in July. This operation saw collaboration with Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil and represents one of the largest coordinated security operations aimed at tackling environmental violations in the Amazon Basin.
Remarkable Achievements
Over a span of 17 days, the operation achieved remarkable results, executing 1,045 field operations. Authorities apprehended 839 suspects and successfully confiscated materials and equipment tied to environmental crimes valued at over $280 million. Sheikh Saif praised these outcomes, stating they reflect the UAE’s ability to translate international partnerships into impactful actions, building a more effective global model to confront transnational environmental crimes.
The UAE’s proactive approach underscores its leadership role in environmental protection, showcasing the importance of collaboration in the fight against climate-related offenses that threaten the Amazon and, by extension, our planet. This success serves as a roadmap for future initiatives aimed at preserving vital ecosystems across the globe.
