Today marks the commencement of the United Arab Emirates’ participation as the Guest of Honor at the 32nd Beijing International Book Fair, taking place from June 17 to June 21 at the National Conference Center in the Chinese capital. This significant presence, organized in collaboration with the UAE Embassy in Beijing and the Ministry of Culture, is themed “Community and People.” It underscores the UAE’s vision of placing humanity at the heart of cultural experiences and reflects the depth of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the UAE and the People’s Republic of China.
Opening Ceremony and Significance
The UAE’s pavilion, dubbed “The Emirati House,” was inaugurated by His Excellency Hussein bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, the UAE Ambassador to China, in the presence of His Excellency Mubarak Al Nakhai, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, alongside several prominent Emirati and Chinese officials. During a walkthrough of the UAE’s pavilion, His Excellency Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of Culture, highlighted the growing importance of knowledge as a strategic resource and a key driver for development and competitiveness. “This participation comes at a time when the value of knowledge is paramount,” he noted.
Cultural Investment and Global Engagement
The Minister emphasized the UAE’s commitment to investing in a comprehensive knowledge system that fosters creativity and innovation. This environment is designed to support the production and dissemination of content both regionally and internationally, aiming to reinforce national identity while preserving cultural heritage and solidifying its presence in the global cultural scene.
“Book fairs are no longer merely platforms for showcasing publications; they have evolved into global arenas for exchanging ideas and anticipating transformations in the knowledge and publishing sectors,” he added. The UAE’s participation in the Beijing International Book Fair presents an opportunity to illuminate the national experience in developing a sophisticated cultural and knowledge sector while promoting the values of openness, tolerance, and coexistence inherent in the UAE’s national identity.
Strengthening Cultural Collaboration
His Excellency Al Qasimi affirmed that the UAE is continuously evolving its cultural policies and initiatives to solidify the role of culture and knowledge within the national development agenda. This approach enhances the cultural sector’s contribution to the national economy, improves quality of life, and builds a community capable of innovation and knowledge production, all while ensuring that national identity remains a fundamental pillar of development and modernization.
He explored various sections of the UAE pavilion and reviewed displays from participating cultural and academic institutions, gaining insight into significant national cultural initiatives and publications.
A Milestone in UAE-China Relations
His Excellency Hussein bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi commented that the UAE’s status as Guest of Honor at the Beijing International Book Fair signifies a crucial milestone in the evolving UAE-China relationship. The growing momentum across various sectors emphasizes both countries’ beliefs in the vital role of culture and knowledge in fostering connections between peoples. This partnership opens new avenues for human and creative collaboration while reflecting the UAE’s commitment to establishing a global cultural presence and enriching intellectual and literary exchanges with diverse cultures.
He added, “Hosting the UAE as the Guest of Honor at the Beijing International Book Fair crowns the ongoing journey of cultural and diplomatic efforts led by our embassy in Beijing in collaboration with our Chinese partners.” This participation builds upon last year’s achievements, which included organizing joint cultural and literary events and launching initiatives for dialogue and knowledge exchange, thus enhancing the visibility of UAE culture among Chinese audiences and paving the way for greater cooperation between cultural institutions in both countries.
His Excellency Ambassador Al Hammadi reiterated that the UAE’s participation in the Beijing International Book Fair exemplifies a national vision that regards culture, knowledge, and creativity as fundamental pillars of sustainable development and the economy of the future. “Cultural and creative industries are no longer confined to cultural activities; they are now engines of economic and social development and sources of innovation and knowledge production.” The UAE continues to support creators, publishers, and content producers, reinforcing its position as a global platform for creativity and cultural exchange, serving as a bridge connecting cultures and civilizations through literature, arts, and knowledge.
As the UAE is honored as the Guest of Honor at the fair for the second time since 2015, this recognition underscores its role as a global platform for civilizational dialogue and cultural exchange, alongside its active participation in supporting the publishing industry and enhancing cultural dialogue both regionally and internationally.
