The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Republic of India continue to strengthen their growing strategic and economic partnership, which serves as an effective model of cooperation within the BRICS framework. This relationship is deeply rooted in historical ties, shared interests, and quality projects that enhance trade, investment, and logistical connectivity between markets.
Growing Trade Between the UAE and India
In the fiscal year 2025-2026, trade between the UAE and India reached an impressive $101.25 billion, marking the second consecutive year that bilateral trade has surpassed the $100 billion threshold. Both nations are aiming to double this figure to $200 billion by 2032, reflecting their commitment to expanding economic collaboration.
Strategic Initiatives Enhancing Partnership
The horizons of the UAE-India partnership are broadening through a series of strategic initiatives and projects, including the “Bharat Mart” and the virtual trade corridor. Furthermore, cooperation within the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is set to enhance supply chain integration and unlock new pathways for trade and investment between the two countries and global markets.
Significance of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement
The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the UAE and India holds particular significance, as it was the first such agreement signed by the UAE, coming into effect in 2022. This agreement has facilitated an increase in the flow of goods, services, and investments, while also expanding opportunities for the private sectors in both nations.
Multilateral Cooperation and BRICS Membership
On the multilateral front, the UAE officially became a full member of BRICS in early 2024 and joined the New Development Bank, thus enhancing its contribution to economic and financial cooperation among member states.
BRICS Summit and the UAE-India Partnership
On September 12, 2024, the 18th BRICS summit commenced in New Delhi, India, under the theme “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.” This event coincides with India’s presidency of the group and the 20th anniversary of BRICS establishment.
The UAE-India partnership, characterised by expanding trade, integrated logistics corridors, and collaboration in investment and innovation, exemplifies the UAE’s role within BRICS. It showcases the country’s commitment to exchanging expertise, sharing insights, and building more cohesive and sustainable economic partnerships.
