A team of students from Abu Dhabi University has developed the Amaan platform, an AI-powered system that transforms smartphones into tools for monitoring infants without the need for wearables or specialised equipment. This innovative solution aims to assist parents in understanding their children’s needs while identifying early indicators of potential health and developmental issues.
Understanding Parental Concerns
According to the team’s members—Ahmed Zuhair, Omar Shabaan, and Mahmoud Akhras—the idea for Amaan was inspired by a survey of 302 parents and caregivers. The results revealed that 61.3% rely on manual checks to ensure their child’s well-being, with 69.5% feeling anxious when they struggle to grasp their infant’s needs. Furthermore, 47% of respondents found interpreting crying to be the most challenging form of communication from their baby.
Application Features
The Amaan application is available in both Arabic and English, enabling users to record or film their child’s crying. It analyses crying patterns to assess needs and uses skin images to detect potential signs of jaundice and other skin conditions. Additionally, the app employs video clips to estimate the child’s heart rate and breathing patterns.
A Complement to Medical Care
The developers emphasise that the platform is not intended to replace professional medical diagnosis or care but rather to enhance home monitoring practices for infants. By bridging the gap between technology and parental instincts, Amaan provides reassurance and insights for caregivers.
Award-Winning Innovation
Amaan has garnered significant recognition, winning first place in two research and innovation competitions at both Abu Dhabi University and Middlesex University.
