Al-Hasakah Residents Endure Hardship Amid Bridge Shortage for Ferries

The issue of inadequate transportation infrastructure in Deir ez-Zor, Syria, has significantly impacted residents, particularly due to the absence of reliable bridges and the heavy reliance on makeshift river ferries. As these ferries become the only means of crossing the Euphrates River, the daily struggles of the local population are further exacerbated, leading to long wait times and increasing transportation costs. This article explores the challenges faced by residents, the nature of these river ferries, and potential solutions being implemented to address the ongoing crisis.

Lack of Bridges and Reliance on River Ferries

Residents of Deir ez-Zor face daily difficulties in crossing the Euphrates River due to the destruction of the province’s bridges following recent floods. The makeshift and temporary bridges that were used as alternatives after the destruction of the main bridges are now completely out of service. This absence has left residents with no choice but to rely on river ferries, which are the only available means of crossing at the “Political Crossing.” However, this reliance creates long queues of vehicles, resulting in wait times of up to three hours.

Understanding the Nature of River Ferries

River ferries are defined as floating platforms powered by locally made engines and generators, but they lack safety standards. These ferries are used to transport individuals and luggage, and sometimes even vehicles, across the Euphrates River. The effectiveness of these ferries is entirely dependent on the stability of the water level and the functionality of the engines, highlighting the risks associated with using them as a temporary solution in the absence of main bridges.

Rising Transportation Costs and Their Impact on Vulnerable Groups

The cost of traveling via these ferries is a heavy burden on residents, especially for low-income groups such as employees and students. The average cost of a daily round trip is approximately 30,000 Syrian pounds. Additionally, women and the elderly face challenges in coping with the situation, as crossing the ferries often requires physical assistance, further increasing their daily struggles.

The “Safe Crossings” Initiative to Improve the Situation

As part of efforts to organize the flow of traffic, the “Safe Crossings” initiative was launched through coordination between the Directorate of Social Affairs and civil society organizations. This initiative aims to facilitate the movement of the elderly and raise awareness among women and children about the dangers of diseases and war. The programs are designed to ensure their safety and enhance their awareness of the potential risks from war remnants.

Plans for Rehabilitation of Roads and Bridges

The Syrian government has announced a budget allocation of $37 million, divided into two main tracks, for rehabilitating infrastructure. The first track focuses on maintaining vital roads, while the second concentrates on rebuilding destroyed bridges. These plans aim to enhance commercial and geographical connectivity and reduce accidents in the region, marking a positive step in addressing the challenges posed by the absence of bridges.
