Researchers from New York University Abu Dhabi and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi have made significant strides in developing a new stent designed to treat gastric leaks, particularly following bariatric surgeries. This innovative stent aims to improve recovery times, allowing patients to return to their daily lives sooner while also reducing the need for additional therapeutic interventions commonly associated with these complications. The findings of this groundbreaking work were published in the journal “Advanced Healthcare Materials.”
Innovative Design of the Lily Stent
The research team introduced the “Lily” stent, inspired by nature and crafted from six petal-like segments to enhance fluid drainage efficiency. Laboratory tests indicated that this new design increased drainage flow by approximately 30 percent compared to standard cylindrical stents currently in use. Notably, the researchers discovered that the cross-sectional shape of the stent plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of fluid movement, surpassing the impact of installation techniques or tube diameter.
Significance of the Study
Khalil Ramadi, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi, emphasized the importance of this research in facilitating quicker recovery for patients undergoing bariatric procedures. By addressing the challenges associated with gastric leaks, the “Lily” stent offers a notable improvement in patient outcomes, paving the way for a better quality of life post-surgery.
Collaboration and Commitment to Patient Care
Dr. Susan Abd Alrazak, CEO of the Academic Office at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, remarked, “This collaboration with New York University Abu Dhabi reflects our commitment to advancing research that directly impacts clinical practice, contributing to enhanced patient care. By combining engineering innovation with clinical expertise, this research demonstrates how academic partnerships can expedite the development of effective solutions for complex surgical challenges.”
Advantageous Features of the Lily Stent
The Lily stent also showcases high flexibility compared to devices made from polyethylene, which may improve patient comfort and reduce tissue damage. This advancement in stent technology holds promise for transforming the management of gastric leaks, ultimately benefiting those affected by such conditions. The study received support from the Institute for Research at New York University Abu Dhabi and the Nation Fund, emphasizing the collaborative efforts behind this innovative project.
