Hussain Desalination Plant Phase One Approaches 90 Percent Completion

The announcement of achieving 90% completion of the first phase of the seawater desalination plant at the Hassyan Complex marks a significant milestone for water production in Dubai. As the project progresses, it promises to enhance the region’s water security and sustainability. This ambitious initiative not only underscores Dubai’s commitment to modern infrastructure but also aligns with strategic goals for future water management. With plans to finalize all phases of this desalination plant by the first quarter of 2027, the Hassyan project is set to play a crucial role in meeting the rising demand for water services in the emirate.

Significant Milestone for the Hassyan Desalination Plant

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has confirmed that approximately 90% of the first phase of the seawater desalination plant at the Hassyan Complex is complete. The total investment in this project reaches 3.377 billion dirhams, making it one of the largest global initiatives utilizing reverse osmosis technology for seawater desalination. This facility also represents DEWA’s inaugural venture into independent water production, highlighting its innovative approach to water management.

Alignment with National Vision

During a recent site visit, DEWA’s Managing Director and CEO, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, emphasized that this project embodies the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai. The desalination plant aims to provide a modern and integrated infrastructure for energy and water that supports Dubai’s rapid growth and responds to the increasing demand for water services. This initiative is part of the authority’s broader strategy to enhance water desalination capacity in Dubai.

Focus on Sustainability

Al Tayer elaborated that the authority is committed to building desalination plants that employ reverse osmosis technology, which requires significantly less energy compared to multi-stage flash distillation plants. This makes reverse osmosis a more sustainable option for seawater desalination. By 2030, DEWA plans to add 240 million gallons to its daily capacity for desalinated water using this innovative technology. The goal is to achieve 100% of desalinated water production through a combination of clean energy and wasted heat, further reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and resource management.

Advancements in Smart Water Infrastructure

Al Tayer’s visit included an overview of various project sections, which serve as a fundamental pillar in supporting the smart infrastructure of desalinated water. The project is closely aligned with the integrated water resources management strategy for 2030. Officials from Hassyan Water Company provided detailed explanations and presentations on the progress made so far, showcasing the significant advancements in this vital water facility.

This achievement of 90% completion in the first phase of the seawater desalination plant at the Hassyan Complex signals a promising future for Dubai’s water security, setting a benchmark for sustainable water management practices in the region.
