The Emirates Health Services Corporation has launched an innovative project titled “One-Day Diagnosis” as part of its “Bureaucratic Zeroing” program. This initiative is designed to significantly expedite breast cancer diagnosis by reducing the average wait time from 19 days to under one day, while also achieving an impressive imaging accuracy of 98%. This remarkable advancement directly enhances patient comfort and satisfaction, particularly among women who often experience anxiety during diagnostic procedures.
Transforming Breast Cancer Diagnosis
This pioneering project is part of a comprehensive plan to enhance radiology services by integrating cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies. It marks a significant transformative shift in radiological services, streamlining the diagnostic process from 19 steps down to just four. As a result, the number of patient visits was reduced by 88%, creating a seamless and comfortable experience while optimizing operational efficiency in healthcare facilities.
Embracing Technology for Superior Diagnosis
Dr. Amina Al Jasmi, Director of Radiology at the Emirates Health Services Corporation, emphasized that the upgrade of radiology services aligns with the broader goal of modernizing healthcare infrastructure to improve diagnostic efficacy. She stated, “We began replacing outdated machines with modern, digital devices that offer clearer images and better detail while reducing radiation doses, which is crucial for patient health.”
Al Jasmi highlighted that the significant improvement results from the integration of artificial intelligence, stating, “We didn’t just update the equipment but also focused on leveraging modern technology in interpreting medical images and accelerating result turnaround, enhancing both the quality and speed of diagnoses simultaneously.”
Phased Implementation of AI Techniques
According to Al Jasmi, the integration of AI technologies was carried out in phases. The first phase involved applying AI to read mammogram images for early breast cancer detection, which has since been rolled out across all breast imaging units. This was followed by the second phase, analyzing chest x-rays to detect lung diseases, implemented in healthcare centers with high patient volumes.
The third phase represented a monumental leap, employing AI for diagnosing strokes by analyzing brain imaging scans, significantly aiding doctors in making rapid and critical decisions, particularly in emergency situations. The institution is also working on future projects that will enhance its position as a leader in the field, including using AI in general radiology to detect osteoporosis, a promising initiative aimed at early prevention and diagnosis of this condition.
Streamlined Experience for Patients
Discussing the “One-Day Diagnosis” project, Al Jasmi remarked, “Previously, the patient experience was complex and required multiple visits. Thanks to AI and our modern technologies, we’ve reduced the number of procedures from 19 to just four and cut down result turnaround from 19 days to less than one day, with an 88% reduction in visitation.” She further elaborated, “Importantly, the quality of images and diagnostic accuracy has risen to 98%, providing patients with immense psychological reassurance and significantly shortening the anxiety-laden waiting period for results.”
Al Jasmi noted that these advancements have not only expedited services but have also enhanced the overall patient experience. “In the past, undergoing mammographic tests could be stressful and intimidating for women. Today, they can receive results on the same day, enjoying a comfortable and smooth experience that builds community trust in healthcare services.”
The outcomes of this initiative reflect the Emirates Health Services Corporation’s dedication to improving healthcare experiences and promoting early disease detection through efficient and high-quality diagnostic services, aligning with national digital transformation goals and elevating the community’s quality of life.
