Life-Changing Bone Marrow Transplant for Rare Autoimmune Disorder in Abu Dhabi

In a remarkable medical achievement, Yas Clinic, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC), has successfully saved the life of a 13-month-old boy suffering from a rare and severe genetic immune disorder. This milestone underscores the significant advancements made in the UAE’s capabilities regarding bone marrow transplants and specialised treatments for rare immune diseases in children.

Medical Background and Diagnosis

From the early months of his life, the child faced recurring and severe infections that necessitated multiple extended hospital stays. His condition was further complicated by an inability to gain weight adequately. Alongside these challenges, he exhibited intense skin rashes, widespread redness, and persistent peeling, resembling the appearance of severe burns—characteristics typically associated with his rare condition.

Genetic Insights and Family History

Medical examinations revealed that the child was diagnosed with a rare genetic immune disorder resulting from a homozygous mutation in the RAG1 gene, accompanied by Omenn syndrome. This condition severely compromises the immune system, making affected individuals vulnerable to life-threatening infections. The family’s medical history, which included the loss of another sibling to a similar condition, expedited the diagnostic and medical evaluation processes, leading to his urgent referral to Abu Dhabi’s bone marrow transplant programme.

Transplant Procedure and Results

Following necessary assessments to identify a suitable donor, it became clear that there were no siblings available for matching. However, both parents were identified as half-matched donors. Due to the child’s critical state and the necessity for immediate action, the medical team proceeded with a bone marrow transplant using stem cells from his father.

Recovery and Future Prospects

The transplant was a success, with the child’s condition stabilising and his immune system gradually restoring its functions. Notably, there was a significant improvement in his skin condition, and the recurrent infections that had plagued him disappeared. He was able to leave the hospital, continuing his recovery while gaining weight effectively.

This case not only exemplifies the advances in medical care in the UAE but also highlights the potential of stem cell therapy in treating severe genetic disorders, offering hope to families facing similar challenges.
