The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a new agreement with Emaar Properties aimed at expanding the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station to increase its capacity by 65%. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to meet the city’s growing demands, particularly during critical periods such as New Year’s celebrations, thereby enhancing the experience for metro users.

Details of the Expansion

The expansion agreement for the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station includes increasing the station’s area from 6,700 square meters to 8,500 square meters. Improvements will be made to entrances and pedestrian bridges, facilitating passenger access to the station. The meeting area and platforms will also be expanded, with the addition of extra stairs and elevators, and the separation of entry gates from exit gates to enhance safety and comfort. New fare gates will be introduced, and investment spaces will be expanded to boost revenue.

Upon completion of the expansion work, the station’s capacity will increase from 7,250 passengers per hour to 12,320 passengers per hour, reflecting a 65% increase. The daily capacity is also expected to reach 220,000 passengers, underscoring Dubai’s readiness to accommodate a growing number of visitors.

Public-Private Partnership

Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the RTA, commented on the agreement, stating, “This agreement embodies the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in enhancing the partnership between the public and private sectors.” He noted that the expansion of the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station represents a strategic investment in the heart of Dubai, where tourism and economic activity are on the rise.

Enhancing User Experience

The Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Station is one of the vital stations in the Dubai Metro, given its proximity to major tourist attractions. Increasing its capacity by 65% will improve the experience for metro users, particularly during peak times, ensuring the highest levels of safety and comfort.

Mohamed Alabbar, founder of Emaar, added that “the expansion of the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station represents an investment in quality of life and the happiness of people by reducing commute times and improving the visitor experience during peak events.” He affirmed that this partnership exemplifies a successful model of collaboration between the two sectors in supporting sustainable growth.

Growth in Passenger Numbers

Since the opening of the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Station in 2010, the station has witnessed significant growth in passenger numbers. The number of users is expected to exceed 10 million in 2023, with a recorded growth rate of 7.5% over the past five years. These statistics reflect the quality of services provided and the increasing mobility demands in the area.

The architectural design of the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Station is characterized by elegance and sophistication, in line with the design of other elevated stations in the Dubai Metro. The design focuses on facilitating passenger movement and ensuring their safety while maintaining connectivity with other public transport options.
