In a significant move, the European Union (EU) has announced that its partnership with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is entering a new phase, rooted in a long-standing relationship that dates back to the country’s early years. This partnership has been strengthened over time through growing economic ties and collaboration in areas of prosperity, security, and long-term stability.
Strengthening Economic Ties
According to a statement from the EU Delegation to the UAE, produced by the European External Action Service, the evolution of European-UAE relations has been gradual, culminating in a broad partnership encompassing diplomatic, economic, political, and security dimensions. Notably, the EU has established itself as the UAE’s primary investment partner and its second-largest trading partner, a status that remains a cornerstone of the existing partnership.
Broader Cooperation Across Sectors
The EU has expressed its eagerness to expand cooperation in areas such as climate change, artificial intelligence, technology, and security. Additionally, a cultural connection is being fostered with the growing presence of European schools in the UAE, which helps in strengthening ties between the two peoples.
A New Chapter Post-COP28
The statement highlighted that the EU and the UAE are currently embarking on “a new chapter” in their partnership, built on the solid foundations established during the recent UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) held in the UAE. Both parties aim to leverage the opportunities available in the green economy and artificial intelligence while enhancing connectivity between Europe and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
Security Cooperation Amid Regional Challenges
Furthermore, the EU reaffirmed the importance of collaboration with the UAE in light of recent security developments impacted by regional conflicts. The EU stands firmly beside the UAE, supporting its resilience and working collectively to safeguard stability both within the nation and across the broader region.
Enduring Commitment to Partnership
The union underscored that genuine partnerships are measured not only by celebratory events but by the ability to stand together during times of instability, reinforcing their commitment to the UAE as a key partner in the region.
