Empowering Youth to Shape the Future of UAE Museums

In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering the youth of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has introduced a specialized program focused on museum management and organization. Announced during the 27th General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Dubai 2025), this program will serve as a crucial foundation for nurturing local talent and preparing them to lead the future of UAE museums with global standards and local creativity. This endeavor emphasizes the importance of guiding young Emiratis as they step into pivotal roles within the cultural landscape of their nation.

The Vision Behind the Program

Under the patronage of Sheikha Latifa, the program has been developed in partnership with Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and Zayed University. This collaboration aims to equip Emirati youth with the skills and knowledge necessary for them to contribute meaningfully to the cultural scene in the UAE. Sheikha Latifa stated, “The importance of museums lies in their role as beacons of knowledge and creativity, fostering learning and cultural dialogue. By facilitating this opportunity for Emirati youth, we are enabling them to transform their passion for culture into meaningful professional paths.”

Commitment to Local Talent Development

Sheikha Latifa also highlighted the crucial role that museums play in preserving cultural heritage and connecting diverse cultures. “We aim to ensure that local contributions become a cornerstone in shaping the future of museums in the UAE, reinforcing its position as a global center for cultural leadership,” she added. This program signifies a significant step toward building a sustainable cultural ecosystem that prioritizes innovation and community engagement through the talents of young Emiratis.

Key Components of the Program

The program, developed with the collaborative efforts of Zayed University’s Community Service Institute and the College of Arts and Creative Industries, addresses the growing need for qualified personnel in museum leadership both nationally and internationally. Combining academic education with hands-on training, the program consists of three main tracks. Firstly, academic seminars will provide weekly sessions covering theoretical foundations and current practices in museum management and cultural leadership. Secondly, practical training will engage students in internships at Dubai Culture’s museums, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. Lastly, the post-training phase will involve students actively applying their skills in cultural events and museum activities.

An Inclusive Approach

Internationally recognized training methodologies will enrich the program, emphasizing interactive learning and student participation. Flexibility and inclusivity are vital principles underpinning the curriculum, designed to meet the diverse needs of students while particularly empowering young women in the northern regions of the Emirates. Through this strategic partnership, Dubai Culture and Zayed University strive to realize the UAE’s vision of creating a sustainable knowledge-based ecosystem in the cultural and creative industries.

The program’s objectives are clear: to train a new generation of cultural leaders in museum management, provide practical and academic knowledge aligned with international standards, enhance the cultural and creative industries in the UAE, and facilitate the acquisition of real-world experiences. By investing in the capabilities of youth to lead the future of UAE museums with global standards and local creativity, the initiative paves the way for a vibrant cultural landscape that thrives on local talent.
