Empowering Seniors in Sharjah: Part-Time Jobs for Community Inclusion

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has expressed strong support for the new part-time work system implemented by the Sharjah Government. He emphasised that this initiative is designed to integrate senior citizens and retirees into the community, helping to protect them from the risks of depression.

Encouraging Senior Engagement

During a phone interview on the “Direct Line” programme, broadcast by Sharjah Radio and Television, Sheikh Sultan remarked, “Senior citizens are often at home, waiting for… the end of life? No. I wish for them to work three days a week, one day on and one day off. I want them to join us because they have something to contribute.”

Aims of the Programme

The Ruler of Sharjah explained that his goal with this initiative is to encourage elderly individuals to leave their homes and actively participate in community life. He stated, “With this programme, seniors can prepare themselves to go to work and engage with everyone. Even if they come to me using a cane, I want them to invigorate the community. Through this, I aim to prevent depression from taking hold of them.”

This proactive approach to the involvement of seniors mirrors a broader commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community in Sharjah, where every individual has the opportunity to contribute positively, regardless of age.
