Dubais Green Charger Initiative Promotes Sustainable Transportation Solutions

The “Green Charger” Initiative by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority Advances Dubai’s Vision for Sustainable Mobility

The “Green Charger” initiative by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is making significant strides toward enhancing Dubai’s vision for sustainable mobility. Launched to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), this initiative reflects a comprehensive approach to improving infrastructure and public engagement. Through fruitful partnerships and an advanced regulatory framework, the “Green Charger” is positioning Dubai as a leader in the green transportation landscape.

Momentum in 2025

Dubai, UAE, February 17, 2026: The “Green Charger” initiative from DEWA gained additional momentum in 2025. This surge is attributed to productive partnerships with key stakeholders aimed at bolstering the charging station infrastructure, alongside the positive response from contractors, consultants, and real estate developers following the new regulatory framework for electric vehicle charging stations launched in October 2024. This momentum contributes significantly to advancing Dubai’s vision for promoting green mobility and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Leadership Support

His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, emphasized the authority’s commitment to leading the UAE and the region in electric and hybrid vehicle adoption. He stated, “DEWA aims to enhance the UAE’s leadership in embracing electric and hybrid vehicles while supporting Dubai’s role in sustainable green mobility.” Al Tayer noted that aligned with the directives of the wise leadership and in harmony with the UAE’s 2050 Climate Neutral Strategy, as well as Dubai’s Green Mobility Strategy 2030, DEWA is committed to ensuring Dubai’s plans for competitive, eco-friendly transportation are realized, thereby improving air quality and lowering carbon emissions in the transport sector.

Increased Usage of Electric Vehicles

The “Green Charger” initiative recorded a notable rise in electric vehicle charging operations in 2025, surpassing 2024 figures. Since its inception in 2014, DEWA has provided over 55,200 megawatt-hours of electricity, enabling electric vehicles to travel more than 276 million kilometers. DEWA offers four types of “Green Charger” stations: ultra-fast charging stations, rapid charging stations, public chargers, and wall-mounted chargers.

Dramatic increases in electric vehicle usage have been observed in Dubai. By the end of 2025, the total number of electric vehicles in the emirate reached 47,944, a significant increase from 37,486 at the end of 2024—an impressive growth of over 10,000 vehicles, equating to a 27.9% increase. Additionally, registrations for the “Green Charger” initiative grew from just 14 users in 2015 to 23,600 users by mid-January 2026. The network of “Green Charger” stations expanded to over 1,860 charging points throughout Dubai, including licensed stations in collaboration with public and private sector entities.

Regulatory Framework for Charging Station Operators

The regulatory framework for electric vehicle charging infrastructure has supported and accelerated the shift toward sustainable mobility in Dubai. This framework, established by DEWA, serves as a comprehensive regulatory reference that governs the infrastructure for electric vehicle charging and delineates licensing requirements for independent charging station operators in the emirate. It considers both current and future sector needs, ensuring that Dubai continues to lead innovations in green mobility. The framework relies on two integrated pathways: direct development of public charging infrastructure by DEWA and its subsidiaries, in addition to development and operation by licensed independent charging station operators.

Strategic Partnerships

DEWA has established effective partnerships to enhance the electric vehicle charging station infrastructure and keep pace with the rapid growth in electric vehicle numbers. Notable agreements include a long-term strategic contract with Dubai Taxi Corporation for the installation of ultra-fast charging stations at multiple Dubai Taxi locations, with a total of 208 ultra-fast charging points to be installed over the contract period.

Moreover, DEWA signed a strategic agreement with Parkin to install 100 EV charging stations in vital areas across Dubai, facilitating further expansion in the near future to cover various parts of the city. DEWA has also contracted with ENOC Group to expand the network of rapid charging stations for electric vehicles across ENOC locations in Dubai.

Accessibility of Charging Stations

The “Green Chargers” provided by DEWA operate 24/7 at numerous strategic locations throughout Dubai. Users can easily locate charging stations via DEWA’s website and mobile application, along with 14 additional digital platforms that enhance accessibility.
