Dubai Mall Metro Station Increases Capacity by 65 Percent

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, in collaboration with Emaar Properties, has announced a significant expansion of the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station. This enhancement aims to accommodate the growing number of passengers, especially during New Year’s celebrations and national holidays. The station’s area will increase from 6,700 square meters to 8,500 square meters, resulting in a 65% boost in capacity, from 7,250 passengers per hour to 12,320 passengers per hour. The daily capacity post-expansion is expected to reach 220,000 passengers, marking a major improvement in public transport efficiency.

Expansion Details and Capacity Growth

According to the RTA’s Director-General and Chairman, Mattar Al Tayer, the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station has witnessed remarkable growth since its opening in early 2010. Passenger numbers surged from 6.13 million in 2013 to 7.254 million in 2016 and continued climbing to 7.885 million by 2019, with an average of 43,000 daily boardings. By 2022, this figure rose to 8.827 million, and in 2023, the station served over 10.202 million passengers, averaging 56,000 daily. Projections indicate that in 2024, this figure will surpass 10.577 million, indicating a daily average of approximately 58,000 boardings.

Improvements to User Experience

The expansion project not only increases the physical size of the station but also enhances various aspects of the user experience. Improvements include upgraded entrances and pedestrian bridges, facilitating easier access to the station. The waiting areas will be expanded, complemented by new escalators and elevators, with separate entry and exit gates for better flow. Additionally, the number of fare gates will be increased, and more investment spaces will be developed to boost revenue. The project also focuses on integrating with other public transport modes and enhancing the aesthetic landscaping around the station.

Future Outlook for Public Transport in Dubai

This major expansion at Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station reflects Dubai’s ongoing commitment to improving its public transportation network. The planned increase in capacity by 65% not only addresses the rising demand but also sets the stage for future growth. As Dubai continues to attract tourists and residents alike, such infrastructure advancements are essential for maintaining efficient mobility within the vibrant city.
