Dubai‘s culinary scene has witnessed a fresh wave of excitement with the arrival of Hudson & Rye, the emirate’s very first authentic New York deli. Built by proud New Yorkers craving a taste of home, this establishment aims to transport patrons to the bustling streets of Manhattan—complete with pastrami, rye bread, and an unmistakable attitude. While it may seem surprising, the demand for a classic Reuben here has surpassed all expectations.
The Ambiance
Hudson & Rye is strategically located across from the gleaming restaurant strip of DIFC, offering the rare luxury of its own car park—a true bonus in this vibrant city. Step inside, and you’re greeted by plush maroon booths designed for six, alongside casual counter stools perfect for those on the go. The walls feature watercolours of famed eateries like Katz’s and Russ & Daughters, creating a nostalgic homage to the delis of yesteryear. Although the space might feel a tad too polished for true Lower East Side grit, its essence remains intact.
Food and Beverage Highlights
The star of the menu is undoubtedly the magnificent pastrami, served in a Reuben that holds its structural integrity, layered with rye bread, Swiss cheese, and tangy sauerkraut. Early reports suggest that the kitchen is rapidly exhausting stock, indicating that Dubai’s discerning foodies have stumbled upon a truly superb sandwich. The sauerkraut is sourced from local supplier Tabchilli, renowned for its traditional fermentation methods, adding a sharp bite to every mouthful.
Coffee aficionados will appreciate that Hudson & Rye has partnered with Cypher—a local roastery that has been popularising speciality beans since 2016. Served in classic white diner mugs, the coffee is no-frills and straightforward, without the pretentious latte art lectures.
Breakfast options are plentiful, with standouts like the Breakfast Buddy—a square-shaped biscuit featuring egg, cheese, and beef sausage, striking the ideal balance between sweet and salty.
Service and Atmosphere
Reflecting the quintessential deli experience, the service is chatty, knowledgeable, and proudly presents the menu without any hard sell. It’s an atmosphere that invites connection and camaraderie, reminiscent of the corner delis of New York.
What’s on the Menu?
Noteworthy dishes include house-made pastrami or oven-roasted turkey on rye (Dhs75), The Busy Corner featuring a chicken cutlet, pastrami, and Swiss on rye (Dhs75), and buttermilk pancakes (Dhs59). The breakfast biscuit filled with beef sausage, egg, and cheese is also an excellent choice for an energising start to the day (Dhs39).
The Culinary Visionary
Chef Dan, adorned in a Hawaiian shirt and boasting two decades of experience in New York kitchens—including a role in the revitalisation of the well-known S&P Lunch diner on 5th Avenue—stands at the helm of this culinary venture. With aspirations for ten locations within five years, we wouldn’t bet against him—especially not with that pastrami.
