In a move aimed at improving the infrastructure of Dubai International Airport, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the awarding of a contract for the expansion of the bridge leading to Terminal 1. This initiative is significant in enhancing traffic flow, reducing travel time for passengers, and providing a better experience for users. With the expected increase in passenger numbers projected to exceed 92 million in 2024, this service aims to meet the growing transportation needs.
Details of the Expansion Project
The RTA, in collaboration with Dubai Airports, has announced a contract for the expansion and development of the bridge leading to Terminal 1 of Dubai International Airport. The project involves expanding the bridge from three lanes to four lanes by constructing a new bridge that utilizes an innovative system of integrated box girders with a concrete slab. This engineering solution was chosen for its focus on high structural efficiency and rapid completion, allowing for smooth traffic flow without the need for detours on Airport Road.
Project Dimensions and Additions
The new bridge will have a total length of 171 meters, including ramps, with a section measuring approximately 70 meters. Additionally, the project will include improvements to road paving, as well as the development of infrastructure, services, and coordination works to achieve better integration with adjacent projects. Street lighting will also be provided to enhance visibility and safety. The project will increase the bridge’s capacity, raising the number of vehicles allowed from 4,200 per hour to 5,600 per hour, representing a 33% increase.
Authority’s Commitment to Infrastructure Development
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the RTA, reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to developing the road and transport infrastructure in Dubai. These initiatives contribute to improving traffic flow and enhancing connectivity between major hubs and vital facilities, including Dubai International Airport, which is considered one of the busiest airports globally. Through the expansion of the bridge leading to Terminal 1, the RTA aims to improve traffic safety and reduce travel times during peak periods.
Previous Infrastructure Development Works
It is noteworthy that the RTA has completed the Airport Road development project in recent years. This project included the construction of bridges and tunnels at key intersections to directly improve traffic flow to Dubai International Airport. This includes the implementation of a bridge that facilitates movement to Terminal 3 of the airport, ensuring smooth traffic without waiting at traffic signals.
