Assessing the Impact of AI Travel Tools on Travelers

In an age where technology reigns supreme, the emergence of AI-powered travel tools is rapidly transforming the travel landscape. These AI-driven tools are marketed as comprehensive solutions, promising to streamline everything from planning your dream getaway to enhancing loyalty points or even pointing out remarkable buildings down the street. But do they truly deliver on these promises? After evaluating offerings from some of the biggest players in the market, the answer seems to be a mixed one, as noted by Gaby Castro-Rut.

AI-Powered Travel Planning Tools

An impressive array of travel planning tools, ostensibly similar, can aid you in creating an itinerary, securing hotel accommodations, and discovering dining options—though with varying degrees of success. The most effective solutions can rival the conversational style found in chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini.

Nevertheless, these travel planning instruments face the same limitations common to AI systems: they don’t always access the latest data and may lack the detailed information provided by sites like Google Flights for air travel; at times, they even generate inaccuracies.

Testing Smart Travel Solutions

Despite the limitations, there are effective strategies to maximize their utility. I consulted experts and tested various planning tools, alongside AI-driven resources aimed at optimizing hotel bookings and facilitating conversation translations. Here’s how they performed.

Expedia’s and Mindtrip’s Intelligent Tools

Expedia Trip Matching

Mission: Transforming Instagram snapshots into a travel itinerary. This well-designed travel planning tool is user-friendly. When you encounter Instagram images from a destination you want to visit, you can send them to Expedia via direct message, just as you would with a friend. The intelligent chatbot begins a conversation, asking about your preferences—”Are you more interested in history, food, nature, nightlife, or something else?”—and tailors its recommendations based on your responses.

Youshen Kodijak, CMO at Expedia Group, stated that the Trip Matching service is aimed at individuals still considering their travel options but not yet committed. He added, “We wanted to provide a service for travelers who see something and say, ‘Hey, this is amazing. What is it?'”

This matching service provides direct booking links for hotels, should you feel the urge to act quickly.

Challenges:

Like other AI tools, the Trip Matching service faces several issues that need addressing. It offered generic recommendations for activities related to my travel destinations and frequently suggested hotels that had little to no availability on my preferred dates. For instance, when I asked for suggestions for a dream holiday in Central Asia, it suggested stopping in Moscow, despite the ongoing war with Ukraine posing significant travel risks for Americans.

Mindtrip

Mission: Delivering custom travel suggestions based on your interests. Featuring stunning visuals akin to those provided by ChatGPT, this tool has an interactive chatbot interface that includes maps and detailed photos of each tourist attraction or lodging. You begin by completing a brief quiz designed to tailor the chatbot’s suggestions to your preferences.

If you’re unsure of follow-up questions to ask, Mindtrip helps with that too—its “You might want to ask” feature offers inquiries that can uncover more details about intriguing locations. Once you narrow down your options, you can seek further information from a staff member.

Featuring approximately 30,000 guides curated by content creators and other users, you can book some hotels directly through the platform, which earns a commission for reservations made via its site.

Challenges:

A notable drawback for this platform is its inability to check flight availability; the site indicated it does not provide “specific flight prices or availability” for certain airlines, and a quick internet search revealed cheaper airfare options for various destinations, although it appeared more accurate for domestic flights.

Mindtrip is free, but you’ll need to create an account after an initial few messages.

Layla and Gondola

Layla

Mission: Offering trip planning advice tailored to your emotions. Saad Said, CEO of Layla, mentioned that this tool works best when you share your feelings with it. “AI is very useful at the beginning of your trip when you’re not entirely sure of what you want. You can articulate what you’re feeling and why you want to travel,” he remarked. “Unfortunately, searching for flights is much better on Google Flights.”

Layla features a chatbot interface similar to Mindtrip, complete with maps and a collection of images, although it sometimes requires prompting to display visuals. Its $49 annual membership offers discounts of up to 20% at select hotels worldwide.

Challenges:

The stark difference between these two tools lies in the conversational style; when I told Layla that I was planning a trip to Vermont this fall, it asked a few questions and then responded, “Tell me the details, and I’ll prepare some great things for you!”—yet it lacked a refined touch.

Another drawback is that Layla sends you fewer than 10 messages before requesting payment. While you can still receive valuable information before that point, I was not convinced that Layla’s services justified the fee, especially considering that other platforms offer similar products for free.

Gondola

Mission: Maximizing loyalty points and miles. Gondola assists in finding the best deals in the convoluted world of loyalty programs. Users can grant Gondola permission to scan their email inbox for travel bookings or enter information manually.

If you hold points with hotel chains like Marriott, Hilton, or Hyatt, Gondola allows you to search all three simultaneously, ranking your options from best to worst in terms of value, while displaying cash and points prices side by side, along with the points you would earn from each option. You can book a hotel directly through Gondola.

The site also monitors airfare and hotel prices even after booking, allowing you to rebook at a lower price should costs decrease. However, you cannot book flights directly through Gondola.

Skyler Erikson, one of the co-founders, stated that Gondola’s target audience includes individuals who travel 10 or more times a year. “Our goal is for you to be a traveler who knows you’re staying two nights in San Francisco and wonders, ‘What’s the best way to do that?’”

While the program features an open text box, it is primarily beneficial as a comparison tool rather than an idea generator.

Smart Glasses

Ray-Ban Meta Glasses

Mission: Accessing travel information quickly. At this point, you’ve booked your trip, checked into your hotel, and are off to explore the sights. What’s that landmark in front of you? Just ask your glasses.

The Ray-Ban Meta glasses utilize AI to provide information, such as identifying that historic fountain in Rome you want to know about. Simply say, “Hey Meta,” followed by your request, and you’ll receive an immediate voice response. They also offer live voice translation between English, Spanish, French, and Italian. This capability seems impressive until you recall that Google Translate boasts around 250 language options.

The glasses, priced from $299, come in various frame colors and lens types, and can be purchased as sunglasses (polarized or non-polarized), blue-light glasses, or with transition lenses, along with prescription options.

According to Meta, battery life lasts approximately four hours for “moderate use,” and you will need a phone for internet connectivity to access most AI features.

Of course, the glasses also contain a camera that stores images and videos in the Meta app for smartphones, and the glasses have a light indicator to inform others that recording is occurring. However, opinions may vary on whether taking a picture with the glasses is easier than simply pulling out your phone.
