The Sheikh Zayed Camel Racing Arena in the scenic Al-Disa, located in Jordan’s Wadi Rum, has kicked off the exciting season of camel racing in the Kingdom with the inaugural preliminary race of 2025. This event, organized in coordination with the Jordanian Camel Racing Federation and supported by the Emirates Camel Racing Federation, marks a significant milestone in the vibrant world of camel racing, also known as “سباقات الهجن.” Highlighting the importance of preserving this esteemed sport, the Sheikh Zayed track, established in 2008-2009, has grown to be one of the region’s premier racing venues.
A Tradition of Excellence
The Sheikh Zayed camel racing season is a testament to Jordan’s rich cultural heritage. Each year, the arena hosts a series of preliminary races leading up to the grand finale, designed to keep the traditions of camel racing alive and to enhance its presence in Jordan and the broader region. This year’s edition promises to be thrilling, featuring six races over the course of the season, including five preliminary races and a final race scheduled for November 2025. Competitions will include various age categories, from novice to mature camels, divided into 22 heats, ensuring ample opportunities for participants.
Promoting Heritage and Competition
In a bid to support camel racing in Jordan, significant cash prizes have been allocated for the top ten finishers in each heat. This initiative aims to reward owners and encourage the sport’s growth while also nurturing traditional Arab customs. The commitment to fostering this ancestral sport extends beyond racing; efforts are underway to ensure that the culture and practice are passed on to future generations. Furthermore, owners have been supplied with authentic racing camels from the presidency’s fine breeds, enhancing the quality and lineage of the racing stock in Jordan.
Integrating Innovation
This year’s races also feature the integration of robotic riders, a significant development that not only promotes the modernization of camel racing but also aligns with modern technological standards. This innovation aims to ensure the sport’s competitiveness and sustainability, adapting to contemporary demands while preserving its essence. The inclusion of robotic riders reflects a forward-thinking approach that could define the future of camel racing in Jordan and beyond.
Strengthening Ties Between Nations
The camel racing season embodies the strong ties between the UAE and Jordan, showcasing the importance both nations place on heritage preservation. Through logistical and technical support, opportunities for participation have expanded for camel owners and racers from Jordan as well as the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The collaboration emphasizes a shared commitment to nurturing and elevating the traditional sport of camel racing, ensuring its enduring legacy in the region.
