The UAE Establishes Itself as a Global Model for Developing Peaceful Nuclear Power Plants
The United Arab Emirates stands out as a prominent example of global leadership in the development of peaceful nuclear power plants. Since the launch of its peaceful nuclear program, the UAE has successfully demonstrated that it can serve as a role model for countries looking to harness nuclear energy as part of their energy mix. This article highlights the foundations upon which the UAE’s peaceful nuclear program was built, its significant successes, and the transparency that has characterized the process.
Foundations of the UAE’s Peaceful Nuclear Program
The UAE’s strategy for developing the Barakah nuclear power plants is based on a strong commitment to transparency at all stages of construction and operation. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed in its 2024 report that the UAE has received a “full transparency” rating for the third consecutive year, reflecting strict adherence to international laws and agreements related to nuclear non-proliferation and the assurance of the program’s peaceful intent.
Vision of Leadership and Strategic Outlook
The journey of the UAE’s peaceful nuclear program began under the guidance of wise leadership, which established a clear vision through the document “UAE Policy for Evaluating the Development of a Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program.” This policy, announced in April 2008, emphasized the importance of transparency, safety, and security, as well as collaboration with governments and international organizations. These efforts culminated in the issuance of the Nuclear Energy Law in 2009, underscoring the country’s commitment to the highest standards of transparency, safety, and nuclear security.
The Role of Enhanced Cooperation and International Oversight
During the development phases of the Barakah plants, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation prioritized building strong relationships with the IAEA, which sent approximately 15 review and inspection missions to the facilities. Additionally, collaboration took place with an international organization of nuclear operators, which conducted around 84 reviews and assessments to maintain adherence to the highest global standards. The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation also conducted 496 comprehensive inspections and reviews, further enhancing the credibility of the UAE’s peaceful nuclear program.
Renewed Goals and Future Steps
Mohammed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, highlighted the importance of support from wise leadership in the company’s achievements and expressed gratitude to partners and regulatory bodies for their significant roles in realizing these accomplishments. He stated that the Barakah programs are just the beginning, as the company focuses on exploring advanced reactor technologies and investing in nuclear energy projects both domestically and internationally, leveraging accumulated expertise.
Undoubtedly, the UAE is solidifying its position as a global model for developing peaceful nuclear power plants through transparency and a high commitment to safety standards, making it an example to follow in the pursuit of a sustainable and secure energy future.
