dnata Launches Self-Driving Vehicles at Al Maktoum International Airport
dnata, a leading company in aviation and travel services, recently announced the launch of a fleet of self-driving vehicles at Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International Airport. This initiative reflects the company’s commitment to modern technology in enhancing services, as dnata now operates six self-driving electric tractors, improving efficiency and safety in ground handling operations.
Details of the Self-Driving Vehicles
dnata utilizes self-driving electric tractors of the “EZTow” model, developed by “TractEasy.” These vehicles assist in transporting luggage between passenger terminals and aircraft and are capable of towing up to four luggage containers at speeds of up to 15 kilometers per hour on pre-defined routes.
Improving Efficiency and Redistributing Staff
The integration of self-driving vehicles into daily operations will lead to the redistribution of staff who previously operated manual tractors, transitioning them to tasks that require a higher skill level. This improvement is expected to expedite luggage delivery and reduce human errors, thereby enhancing overall safety and efficiency in airport operations.
Moving Towards Full Autonomy
dnata will commence this project, costing 6 million AED (1.6 million USD), at Level 3 of autonomous driving, which requires limited human supervision. It is anticipated that the company will reach Level 4 autonomy by early 2026, enabling fully autonomous driving in controlled environments.
Strong Partnership for Technology Development
This launch follows over a year of collaboration between dnata, “TractEasy,” Dubai Airports, and the General Civil Aviation Authority to develop a new regulatory framework that allows for the operation of self-driving vehicles in airport environments. This initiative will enable dnata to test multiple operational models for autonomous ground handling, focusing on finding the best model for future implementation.
The Importance of Automation in the Aviation Industry
Jafar Dawood, Senior Vice President of Airport Operations in the UAE at dnata, commented, “Automation can be a vital element in establishing a smarter and safer infrastructure, especially with the growing demand for global travel.” Meanwhile, Rich Reno, CEO of “TractEasy,” noted the increasing interest in using self-driving ground support equipment, emphasizing that the partnership with dnata paves the way for a safer and more efficient future.
