Mubadala Joins $7.9 Billion Consortium to Acquire Techem

Mubadala Investment Company, the sovereign wealth fund of Abu Dhabi, has joined a newly formed consortium to acquire the German company Techem for an impressive total of AED 29 billion (approximately US$7.9 billion). This strategic move underscores Mubadala’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy and sustainability portfolio while embracing the digital transformation of the real estate sector.

Strategic Partners in the Consortium

Joining Mubadala in this significant investment are notable industry players such as Partners Group, a major force in global private markets; GIC, a leading global investor; and TPG Rise Climate, the focused climate investment arm of TPG. Together, this consortium aims to leverage their combined expertise to enhance Techem’s market presence and capabilities.

Expected Closing Timeline

The acquisition is anticipated to finalize in the second half of 2025, contingent on meeting standard conditions and obtaining necessary regulatory approvals. This timeline reflects the complexities typically associated with large-scale acquisitions in the real estate sector, particularly those involving substantial commitments to sustainability initiatives.

Techem’s Role in Sustainability

Founded in 1952, Techem has established itself as a pioneer in providing digitally enabled solutions for the real estate market. With a customer base exceeding 440,000 across 18 countries and management of over 13 million dwellings, Techem installs approximately 62 million devices worldwide. These devices play a pivotal role in promoting energy efficiency, reducing consumption, and decreasing CO2 emissions through cost-effective and non-invasive methods.

Impact and Future Directions

The services offered by Techem are crucial for the long-term decarbonization of the real estate industry, which contributes about 40 percent of global CO2 emissions. Previously, in 2018, Techem was acquired by a consortium led by Partners Group, which enabled the company’s significant growth, culminating in revenues exceeding EUR 1 billion (around US$1.17 billion) and a 50% increase in EBITDA.

Under the new ownership consortium, the previous stakeholders will divest their shares, allowing Mubadala and its partners to implement a value creation strategy aimed at solidifying Techem’s leadership as a digital-first submetering service provider across Europe. Plans include further digitalizing operations, enhancing offerings such as smart meters, and introducing additional digital services to improve building efficiency.

Abdulla Mohamed Shadid, Head of Energy and Sustainability at Mubadala’s Private Equity Platform, emphasized the ongoing global priority of decarbonizing the real estate sector. He remarked, “As a trusted and leading sub-metering services provider with a digital edge, Techem is well-positioned to continue leading this transition, improving the energy management of buildings through better efficiency and consumption. This transaction aligns with Mubadala’s long-term commitment to deploying capital purposefully and helping to find solutions to global challenges.”

Following the completion of the acquisition, Partners Group’s infrastructure business will retain a controlling interest in Techem for the benefit of its clients. David Daum, Partner and Head of Infrastructure Europe at Partners Group, expressed enthusiasm about the future potential of Techem, stating, “We see great potential for the company moving forward and are pleased to be able to continue to actively drive this success story with our new investors GIC, TPG Rise Climate, and Mubadala. Energy efficiency is a key thematic focus, and Techem is poised to continue benefiting from the thematic tailwinds of the push for decarbonization.”
