Dubai Media Council Showcases the Richness of Kazakh Culture

In a celebration of cinematic arts, the Dubai Media Council, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Kazakhstan in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, has launched the “Kazakhstan Film Week.” This initiative is part of the “Dubai Cinema Nights” programme, which aims to honour film art through various events held throughout the year in Dubai. The week-long festivities commenced two days ago, coinciding with Kazakhstan’s Republic Day, and will be hosted over three days at Reel Cinemas in Dubai Mall.

A Cultural Window into Kazakhstan

The Kazakhstan Film Week offers Dubai’s audience a unique glimpse into Kazakh culture and storytelling techniques. This year’s programming includes a musical film celebrating the legacy of one of Kazakhstan’s prominent composers, along with an inspiring narrative about two brothers whose lives change through sport.

Notable Attendees and Support

The opening night, which was reserved for distinguished guests, saw the attendance of key figures including Almaz Tasbolat, the Consul General of Kazakhstan in Dubai and the Northern Emirates; Hisham Sultan Al-Olama, the Executive Director of Media Development at the Dubai Media Council; and Samer Marzouki, Director of Film and Production at Dubai Film and Gaming Office. The film’s director and producer, Sanat Shabashov, was also present alongside a multitude of partners and guests.

Promoting Cultural Heritage

The support from the Dubai Media Council for the Kazakhstan Film Week reflects its ongoing efforts to cultivate a media landscape that allows communities residing in Dubai to showcase their cultural heritage and connect with the Emirati society. This initiative aims to create shared spaces where cinematic stories can reinforce cross-cultural dialogue. Additionally, it aligns with the Council’s mission to present global cinematic works in Dubai and establish long-lasting cultural and creative partnerships.

Significance of the Occasion

On October 25, Kazakhstan marked its Republic Day, a national occasion that represents the country’s history and identity, as well as its commitment to building a prosperous future. Almaz Tasbolat noted that celebrating this day in Dubai through the Kazakhstan Film Week enables audiences to discover the richness of his homeland’s stories, music, and vibrant characters brought to life on screen. He further emphasized that the selected films encapsulate the depth of Kazakh cultural heritage and offer insight into the experiences and aspirations of its people.

The Power of Cinema

Hisham Sultan Al-Olama expressed that the Kazakhstan Film Week illustrates cinema’s capability to unite people by sharing narratives that shape national identities. He pointed out Dubai’s diverse population, representing various nationalities, and highlighted initiatives like Dubai Cinema Nights as an opportunity for these communities to share their stories and celebrate their cultures with a broader audience.

Exciting Film Line-Up

Opening the programme was “In the Arms of Happiness,” directed by Sanat Shabashov in 2025. This film is the first musical in the Kazakh language, based on previously released well-known songs, and pays tribute to the esteemed Kazakh composer Shamshi Kaldayakov. The plot follows the journey of Bakht, a young man with multiple university degrees struggling to find employment. His relocation from the city of Aris to Astana with his family leads him to work as a personal assistant to a prominent oil company executive, where he finds love, only to be faced with a fateful choice between love and life.

Upcoming Films

Yesterday, “In the Arms of Happiness” was screened in a free public showing, followed by today’s presentation of the sports drama “Alga,” directed by Yernar Nurgaliyev.
