Abu Dhabi (WAM) – The Mohammed bin Zayed Initiative for Water is pioneering agricultural solutions that aim to enhance food production while minimising water usage. These innovative techniques are built upon previous research conducted outside the UAE, with ongoing assessments being made to evaluate their effectiveness in the Emirates’ unique environment.
Innovative Competition for Water-Efficient Solutions
Among the finalists of the “Water Challenge for Agriculture,” part of the broader “Water Challenge” programme initiated by the Mohammed bin Zayed Initiative, are two notable companies: Egypt’s “Agri-Fit” and Brazil’s “Kryltic.” This competition focuses on developing solutions that decrease water consumption while maintaining or even improving crop productivity, especially in water-scarce regions.
Agri-Fit’s Sustainable Breakthrough
The Agri-Fit team has devoted years to studying how living organisms respond to light and environmental conditions. Their research culminated in the creation of “Agri-Fit Green,” an innovative product that is now patented in Egypt. This solution utilises natural compounds derived from plants and is applied via foliar spraying to enhance growth and adaptability to drought, heat, and salinity stress.
“Agri-Fit Green” supports photosynthesis and regulates water balance, enabling efficient resource usage and helping plants withstand various stresses, making it a promising option for farmers facing challenging climatic conditions.
Kryltic’s Advanced Carbon Nanoparticle Solution
Meanwhile, Kryltic’s offering, named “Arbolina,” is based on modified surface carbon nanoparticles known as “carbon dots.” This cutting-edge product bolsters processes linked to the enzyme “H-ATPase,” promotes photosynthesis, aids in carbon fixation, and optimises energy metabolism. As a result, it improves the conversion of light, water, and nutrients into plant growth and yield.
The Mohammed bin Zayed Initiative for Water and its focus on innovative agricultural solutions represent a significant step forward in addressing the critical challenges of water scarcity and food security. By harnessing technology and scientific research, these efforts aim to ensure sustainable agricultural practices are within reach for the future.
