At the Arab Media Summit in Dubai, Anwar Gargash, a prominent figure in Emirati politics, expressed a clear stance regarding the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and its approach to regional security and diplomacy. He asserted that while the UAE stands ready to defend itself, it simultaneously reaches out with a hand of friendship and opens doors for dialogue.
Encouraging Dialogue with Iran
Gargash highlighted the importance of fostering constructive dialogue with Iran and pointed to recent statements by Iranian President Masoud Bezhkishan as a sign of hope. He regarded Bezhkishan’s comments as the most rational coming from Iranian officials, noting that he was the first to criticise the policy aimed at targeting Gulf countries. “Bezhkishan is a voice of reason,” Gargash remarked, underscoring the need to appreciate such voices which could potentially lead the region out of its current crises.
Strong Ties with Saudi Arabia
In his discourse, Gargash also reaffirmed the UAE’s strong connection with Saudi Arabia, stating, “The security of Saudi Arabia is the security of the UAE.” He elaborated on this strategic relationship, emphasising that the two nations’ security is intertwined regardless of the circumstances. “Our fundamental belief today is that the stability of the Gulf system is in total cohesion,” he added. Gargash affirmed that the channels of communication remain open with Saudi Arabia, and the security, stability, and prosperity of the kingdom are inextricably linked to those of the UAE.
“It is in our interest that Saudi Arabia remains secure and flourishing, which in turn supports our own security and prosperity,” Gargash concluded, reinforcing a message of unity and strategic collaboration in the region.
