The United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities recently thwarted two separate smuggling operations, one aimed at illegally bringing individuals into the country and the other intended to facilitate the escape of a person wanted by law enforcement. The official report from the Emirates News Agency (WAM) details these incidents, revealing the measures taken to combat such illegal activities.
First Operation: Smuggling into the UAE
The first smuggling attempt involved an effort to bring 18 individuals of Asian nationality into the UAE illegally. According to WAM, authorities received intelligence suggesting a planned operation to smuggle these individuals in waves, orchestrated with the assistance of a person holding citizenship from a Gulf state.
Subsequent surveillance led to the apprehension of the Gulf national soon after entering through a border checkpoint. He was found to be accompanied by two of the smuggled individuals and five family members, a ploy intended to disguise the illicit nature of the operation by presenting it as a family trip.
Second Operation: Smuggling a Wanted Individual Abroad
The second operation was aimed at smuggling a foreign individual out of the UAE, allowing them to evade law enforcement restrictions against them. This attempt was allegedly orchestrated by a woman with Gulf citizenship, in collaboration with her daughter. Authorities noted that the pair leveraged their family connections and the ease of their travel to conceal their activities.
Investigations revealed that the woman had a history of engaging in similar smuggling activities. Notably, her son-in-law had previously been implicated in related cases, underscoring a pattern of illegal behaviour within the family.
Legal Proceedings and Investigations
The UAE authorities confirmed that all individuals involved in these smuggling operations have been apprehended. The public prosecution is actively conducting investigations to fully understand the circumstances surrounding these incidents and to identify the roles of those implicated.
