In a significant move to honour the strategic importance of Khorfakkan and its port, Emirates Shipping Line (ESL) has named one of its vessels “ESL KHORFAKKAN”. This initiative underscores the company’s commitment to the growing role of Khorfakkan as a pivotal maritime gateway on the eastern coast of the United Arab Emirates.
Strengthening Ties with Khorfakkan Port
The choice to name the vessel “Khorfakkan” highlights the deep-rooted relationship between ESL and the port, which began in March 2019 when Khorfakkan Port welcomed the first voyage of ESL’s main GALEX (GLX) service. Since that pivotal moment, Khorfakkan has played a crucial role in ESL’s shipping network.
Khorfakkan’s Expanding Role in Trade
The timing of this announcement coincides with rapid developments at Khorfakkan Port, further solidifying its position on the regional and international trade and logistics map. Benefiting from its strategic location on the Gulf of Oman and direct connections to global shipping routes, the port has advanced operational capabilities that enable it to accommodate large vessels and cargo volumes.
Recent Milestones at Khorfakkan Port
Recent operational milestones at Khorfakkan Port have demonstrated its enhanced capacity and infrastructure readiness. Notably, in July 2026, the port received the colossal container ship “MSC LORETO”, which has the capacity to hold 24,232 standard containers and measures approximately 400 meters in length. This event showcased the port’s ability to handle ultra-large container ships effectively.
Additionally, in August, Khorfakkan welcomed the “BYD Changsha,” which transported 6,068 new energy vehicles from China via a direct maritime line. These significant events reflect Khorfakkan Port’s growing role in trade dynamics, supply chains, and its versatility in handling both containers and vehicles, bolstering its status as a major maritime and logistics hub that connects global trade routes to local markets.
Enhancing Logistical Options
Emirates Shipping Line has leveraged Khorfakkan Port’s strategic location to offer alternative logistical solutions, including offloading shipments directly at the port and transporting them overland to their destinations. This approach supports the continuity of goods movement and strengthens connectivity to key ports and inland destinations throughout the Gulf region, emphasising the port’s strategic significance in supporting supply chain resilience and trade flow in the area.
A Tribute to Khorfakkan’s Legacy
The naming of the “ESL KHORFAKKAN” vessel represents ESL’s appreciation for Khorfakkan Port’s legacy and its contributions to regional trade. It reflects the long-standing partnership between ESL and the port, as well as the commitment to continuing to enhance cooperation and the port’s presence within ESL’s shipping network.
Established in 2006, Emirates Shipping Line is a leading global container shipping company based in the United Arab Emirates.
