Mohammed bin Zayed Launches Youth Water Leadership Program

The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative has announced the launch of the national programme “Water Pioneers,” aimed at cultivating a generation of Emirati youth from diverse fields. This initiative will equip them with the knowledge, skills, and leadership capabilities necessary to contribute to both national and global efforts to develop sustainable solutions to tackle water scarcity challenges.

Empowering Young Leaders in Water Sustainability

The launch of the Water Pioneers programme underscores the initiative’s commitment to empowering Emirati youth and enhancing their roles in shaping the future of the water sector. By providing a comprehensive platform for learning, capacity building, knowledge exchange, and active participation in national and international dialogues regarding water issues, the program seeks to foster future leaders in water sustainability.

Program Participation and Registration Details

Registration is now open for the first cohort of the programme, which will include 15 participants aged between 18 and 35 from various academic disciplines and professional sectors. This diverse selection reflects a range of experiences and perspectives aimed at fostering innovation and enhancing collaboration to develop sustainable solutions for water challenges.

The Global Water Security Crisis

As global water security challenges escalate due to increasing demand for water resources and the rising impacts of climate change, it is projected that the demand for sustainable water supplies will exceed 40% by 2030. Simultaneously, 2.2 billion people worldwide lack safely managed drinking water, while 3.5 billion lack access to safe sanitation services. Approximately 4 billion experience severe water scarcity for at least one month each year, highlighting the urgent need for innovative solutions and sustainable development.

Vision for a Sustainable Water Future

Aisha Alitiqi, CEO of the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, stated that the launch of the Water Pioneers programme reflects a long-term commitment to empowering a generation of Emiratis equipped with the knowledge and vision to contribute to a more sustainable future for water resources. She emphasised that water scarcity is not merely an environmental challenge, but a strategic issue that affects communities, stability, and development opportunities.

Youth as Catalysts for Change

The creativity and initiative of youth position them as key drivers in addressing water-related challenges. Alitiqi remarked that by empowering fresh Emirati voices and enhancing awareness of water issues, the program aims to prepare individuals capable of actively engaging in global water discussions and supporting innovation, collaboration, and the development of solutions that address contemporary challenges and create a lasting impact for future generations.

Contributions at Local and Global Levels

With a growing role in shaping climate and sustainability agendas, youth in the UAE are increasingly invested in addressing water scarcity. Locally, they will propel actions that enhance community resilience to these challenges, while globally, they will build bridges of cooperation with peers worldwide. Providing more opportunities for young people to engage actively in shaping their future reinforces their contributions and affirms the need for effective platforms that educate and empower them.

Goal of the Water Pioneers Programme

The Water Pioneers programme aims to develop a generation of leaders capable of transforming one of the world’s greatest challenges into opportunities for creativity and innovation in the water sector, aligning with the UAE’s established approach to investing in youth and empowering them as essential partners in building the future of the nation and the world. Those interested can register for the programme via the Youth Program Application of The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, with a registration deadline set for October 7, 2026.
