In a significant move to enhance Dubai‘s infrastructure, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded two contracts for the development of Al Meydan Street, valued at 1.161 billion dirhams. This project is expected to improve traffic flow, elevate the quality of life, and cater to the emirate’s rapid urban and economic growth, with completion anticipated by the end of 2028.
Enhancing Public Infrastructure
In line with the directives of the wise leadership, the RTA is committed to developing the infrastructure of the road network in Dubai. This initiative aims to support the ongoing urban expansion and improve traffic flow, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life. The strategic development of Al Meydan Street involves the construction of various key intersections featuring a total of 3,700 metres of bridges and 17 kilometres of roads, alongside the establishment of dedicated bike lanes to facilitate connectivity with existing paths.
Strategic Road Network Expansion
Matar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasised that the authority is advancing several strategic projects aimed at enhancing Dubai’s road network. This ambitious endeavour aligns with the vision of the emirate’s leadership, which prioritises investment in infrastructure to bolster comprehensive development. Al Tayer noted that this proactive approach is crucial to creating a well-connected, efficient road network that meets the demands of population and economic growth while fostering a higher quality of life.
Optimising Traffic Flow
The development of Al Meydan Street is pivotal to Dubai’s urban landscape, serving as a crucial parallel corridor alongside Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. This project is expected to improve connectivity between crucial areas while increasing the capacity of traffic operations in northern and southern directions by 18%. Furthermore, it aims to reduce travel time from 30 minutes to just 10 minutes between Manama Road and Dubai-Al Ain Road to Umm Suqeim Road, reflecting a remarkable improvement of 66%.
Project Details
The development project spans from Al Khail Road to Umm Suqeim Road, incorporating vital thoroughfares such as Al Khail Road, Latifah bint Hamdan Road, and Marabaa Road. The project will also expand Marabaa Road leading to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
Contract One Overview
The first contract focuses on the enhancement of Al Meydan Street from its intersection with Latifah bint Hamdan Road up to Umm Suqeim Road. It further includes improvements to Marabaa Road, stretching from Dubai Hills to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, covering approximately 14 kilometres. This segment comprises the construction of a bridge over the intersection at Marabaa Road, converting it into a four-lane overpass, thus increasing capacity to accommodate 14,400 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Contract Two Overview
The second contract will enhance Al Meydan Street from its intersection with Al Khail Road, passing through Al Khail Road until its junction with Masqat Road. This will establish new surface roads connecting Al Meydan Street to Latifah bint Hamdan Road, thereby improving the integration of the road network. Additional upgrades will involve converting the Al Meydan intersection with Masqat Road from signal-controlled to a multi-level overpass allowing free traffic movement in all directions.
Strategic Integration and Future Prospects
The Al Meydan Street development project is part of a broader strategy by the RTA to refine Dubai’s primary road network. This initiative will integrate seamlessly with the recently awarded Latifah bint Hamdan street project, creating an interconnected route system that enhances traffic management across the emirate’s essential arterial roads such as Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.
A Commitment to Sustainability
The integration of bike lanes and underpasses in the project highlights the RTA’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions. These additions will facilitate safe and efficient cycling options, contributing to a holistic approach to mobility in Dubai.
