Sharjah’s Saud bin Saqr Welcomes Dutch Water Experts

In a significant diplomatic engagement, His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council and ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, welcomed Paul Imkers, the Consul General of the Netherlands in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, at his palace in the city of Saqr bin Muhammad. Accompanying Imkers was a delegation of Dutch experts and representatives from various water-related enterprises.

Strengthening Water Resource Management Collaboration

During the meeting, Sheikh Saud expressed his warm welcome to the Consul General and his accompanying delegation, emphasising the importance of enhancing cooperation and exchanging expertise in water resource management. He highlighted Ras Al Khaimah’s commitment to adopting advanced solutions and experiences in this vital area.

Plans for Water Resilience and Sustainable Solutions

The discussions centred around the emirate’s plans to bolster water resilience and develop comprehensive strategies for water storage and management, as well as its reuse. The meeting addressed the potential of leveraging Ras Al Khaimah’s unique natural resources to establish a more efficient and sustainable water management system.

High-Level Meeting on Water Resilience

Furthermore, the delegation’s participation in a high-level meeting hosted by the emirate today at the Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone (RAKEZ) was highlighted. This gathering focused on enhancing water resilience, aimed at formulating a long-term master plan that strengthens water security and equips the emirate, and the nation as a whole, to tackle future challenges while supporting the UAE’s Water Security Strategy 2036.

A Comprehensive Approach to Water Management

The dialogue sought to establish a comprehensive framework for this master plan, based on evaluating an integrated system of possible solutions for water storage, supply, and distribution, rather than reviewing individual projects or technologies separately. Proposed solutions included the construction of reservoirs in mountainous areas, strategic aquifer recharge, storing freshwater underground and beneath the seabed, integrating desalination methods, and reusing treated water. The meeting also discussed enhancing the existing and future dam infrastructure to safely connect these components to the national water network.
