As the new academic year 2026-2027 approaches, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has ramped up its preparations with a series of operational and regulatory measures aimed at enhancing student safety and optimising school transport services. This initiative also includes an increase in public transport capacity in school areas during peak hours.
Intensive 30-Day Inspection Campaign
The RTA has announced the launch of an intensive 30-day inspection campaign that will cover schools and school buses across Dubai. This campaign aims to ensure compliance with safety standards and operational procedures, alongside field inspections to verify the validity of permits for school bus drivers and supervisors.
Operational Readiness Requirements
The authority has issued directives to school bus operators, emphasising the importance of achieving operational readiness before the start of the school year. This encompasses ensuring bus readiness, conducting comprehensive safety checks, adhering to established operational procedures, and confirming the validity of driver and supervisor permits.
Increased Public Transport Frequency
To improve transport efficiency during school peak hours, the RTA plans to increase service frequency on over 30 public bus routes serving key school areas such as Al Nahda, Al Muhaisnah, Al Barsha, Al Quoz, Dubai Silicon Oasis, and Al Qusais. This initiative aims to enhance service availability and reduce waiting times for passengers.
Enhanced Taxi Availability
Additionally, the RTA will increase the availability of taxis in several school zones to meet the rising demand during school start and end times, providing parents and students with more transport options.
Expanded School Transport Options
The RTA is also supporting specialised services through electronic booking options with limousine operators, including Careem School Rides, Uber Teens, and BOLT School. These services utilise modern fleets and prioritise highly-rated drivers in terms of safety. Furthermore, a shared school transport initiative is being facilitated in Al Barsha via the Yango app, allowing students to share rides through customised school transport packages.
Discounts for Students
Students can benefit from a 50% discount on RTA public transport services through the “Nol” student card, which applies to the Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, and public buses.
Commitment to Safety and Efficiency
The RTA emphasises that its preparations for the school season are built upon a comprehensive framework that integrates preventive inspections, field monitoring, regulatory compliance, increased public transport capacity, and technology-supported transport options. The authority reiterates that safety remains its top priority.
