The Mohammed bin Rashid Library is set to host the “Letters of Literature Forum” on September 1 and 2, honouring the art of letter writing as a significant literary and cultural experience. This event aims to document thoughts, feelings, and relationships among creatives throughout history, reflecting the library’s commitment to enriching the cultural and intellectual landscape while fostering dialogue between cultures and generations.
A Diverse Programme Celebrating Epistolary Literature
The forum will feature a varied agenda that highlights the historical relevance of letter writing in both Arab and global cultures. Attendees can look forward to discussing notable examples and examining the human, intellectual, and aesthetic dimensions of this literary form. A significant paper, titled “Letters in Emirati Culture,” will be presented, focusing on the role of letters in the local cultural memory.
Focused Sessions on Prominent Literary Figures
Among the key sessions, a collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Centre for Arabic Language will delve into the letters of the esteemed poet Abu al-‘Ala al-Ma‘arri. Another session will explore how the correspondence of renowned writers serves as a unique intersection of art and creativity. Additionally, the forum will shine a light on the letters of Al-Jahiz, emphasising their importance in the Arab literary heritage.
Global Perspectives and Contemporary Discussions
On the second day, the forum will extend its reach by offering discussions in Russian, English, and French, showcasing international experiences. Topics will include the literary friendships forged through correspondence, the evolution of letter writing in the digital age, and the influence of “Portuguese Letters” on self-expression and imaginative writing.
Creative Workshops and Accessibility Options
The programme also features a “Letter Writing Laboratory,” a two-day creative writing workshop aimed at helping participants enhance their expressive skills and text development. To ensure wide accessibility, the library will provide simultaneous translation for all sessions, reinforcing the international aspect of the forum and allowing a multilingual audience to engage with diverse literary experiences and human narratives.
