Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has announced that applications are now open for the LanD 2027 programme, an initiative aimed at training individuals in the documentation of cultural scenes. This international capacity-building programme focuses on the dynamic and living systems of cultural documentation.
Innovative Training Programme for Cultural Documentation
LanD 2027, organised in collaboration with the CHEDAR project and in partnership with the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and various specialist organisations in heritage documentation, stands as the first training programme of its kind in the region. It aims to provide a comprehensive approach to documenting cultural scenes.
The programme invites 20 heritage professionals from across the Middle East and North Africa to participate. Accepted candidates will take part in field training held in Al Ain city, Abu Dhabi Emirate, from 26 April to 5 May 2027. Additionally, a series of online introductory courses (MOOCs) will be available from January to April 2027.
The training programme is designed to enhance participants’ abilities in cultural documentation through integrated methodologies that place human interests at the forefront. It adopts a holistic approach linking nature and culture, while integrating traditional knowledge with advanced techniques. LanD 2027 will also address the complexities of documenting cultural scenes by considering both the tangible and intangible dimensions that contribute to their formation.
The Heliy Oasis will serve as a practical case study within the programme, showcasing how comprehensive documentation can support efforts in heritage preservation and sustainable management based on robust scientific foundations.
Under the guidance of a select group of international experts in heritage documentation, the programme targets early to mid-career professionals from various disciplines, including architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, archaeology, heritage conservation, geography, geographic information systems (GIS), environmental sciences, anthropology, ethnography, social sciences, and heritage management and policies. Applicants are required to have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, along with three to five years of professional experience in heritage. Familiarity with documentation methods or fieldwork is an added advantage, along with the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary and diverse teams, and a practical command of English.
The application window will remain open until 15 October. Interested candidates can find more information regarding the admission criteria and application process at: https://abudhabiculture.ae/ar/land-2027.
Through the LanD 2027 programme, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi continues to advance its mission of protecting and promoting cultural heritage, investing in the skills and expertise that will shape the future of this sector.
