Classroom Specifications in Abu Dhabi
The Abu Dhabi Education Authority has outlined essential guidelines for classroom standards, as detailed in a policy document reviewed by “Al Khaleej.” The specifications focus on appropriate space, equipment, and classroom location, particularly for kindergarten and early learning stages (Grades 1-3).
Space Requirements
Schools must ensure that classroom dimensions meet minimum requirements specified in the latest design guide for private schools. For the early grades, classrooms should provide adequate space to accommodate no more than 30 students per class.
Essential Classroom Equipment
Each classroom must include essential furniture and technology. The minimum requirements state that classrooms should be equipped with:
- Tables and chairs
- An interactive board (green or white)
- A teacher’s desk with a chair
- A storage cabinet for learning resources
Classroom Location
Proper positioning is another key standard. Classrooms for kindergarten pupils should ideally be situated on the ground floor or at a level with direct exit access, enhancing safety and accessibility.
External Space Requirements
The authority emphasises the importance of outdoor spaces, mandating that schools meet ten specific requirements. These include designing external areas to ensure the safety and supervision of students, the provision of sufficient drainage, and maintaining environments free of hazardous materials and harmful plants, such as thorny species and sharp-edged objects.
Furthermore, schools must account for outdoor temperature and ensure shaded areas to protect students from direct sunlight, while also providing chilled drinking water near outdoor play areas. Equipment must be designed to prevent injury, such as covering sharp edges with padded materials at a height of no less than 1.2 meters.
Finally, schools are required to ensure safe loading and unloading areas for school buses and staff vehicles within the school premises to enhance safety for all users.
