Sharjah 24 – WAM:
The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has released its annual report for 2025, showcasing its key activities and regulatory achievements in nuclear safety, security, radiation protection, and non-proliferation. The report also highlights its efforts to strengthen cooperation both nationally and internationally.
Transformational Initiatives Aligned with National Vision
A significant emphasis of the report is on various transformational projects launched by FANR in support of the “We Are the Emirates 2031” vision. These initiatives aim to enhance the efficiency of the regulatory framework, establish institutional excellence, and support the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Streamlining Import and Export Processes
One of the standout initiatives is the launch of a unified digital platform for import and export systems. This platform is designed to simplify the procedures for importing and exporting nuclear and radiological materials while maintaining effective oversight.
Acknowledging Excellence in the Nuclear Sector
Additionally, FANR has introduced the Nuclear and Radiological Sector Excellence Award, which recognises outstanding individuals and institutions that have contributed to the development of the nuclear and radiological sector in the UAE.
Robust Inspection and Compliance Efforts
In the realm of nuclear safety, FANR conducted 36 inspections at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant during 2025 to ensure that the operator adheres to the highest nuclear safety and security standards, as well as non-proliferation requirements set by the authority. Furthermore, more than 800 inspections were performed at medical and industrial facilities to verify the safe handling, use, and transport of radioactive materials, thereby ensuring the protection of the community and the environment.
Emergency Preparedness and International Collaboration
To enhance the nation’s readiness for emergency response, FANR participated in and conducted 15 national and international exercises focused on emergency preparedness. Collaborative efforts involved national entities and international partners, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
International Conferences and Research Initiatives
During 2025, FANR hosted the Eighth International Conference on Radiation Protection, which attracted over 600 international experts. The conference served as a platform to discuss the latest advancements in the sector, including advanced medical applications, artificial intelligence, and environmental protection.
Advancing Research and Development
FANR also continued to enhance its research and development programmes by engaging in 10 national and international research projects in collaboration with leading institutions, including the IAEA and the Nuclear Energy Agency. These projects focus on improving reactor safety and exploring the application of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and human factors, to support regulatory practices and enhance the future of nuclear oversight.
The report reflects FANR’s ongoing commitment to protecting the community, workers, and the environment, while promoting the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear energy and radioactive materials in the United Arab Emirates.
