In a significant development for road safety and service efficiency, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has announced a remarkable 30% increase in the number of eye testing centres for driving licence applications and renewals. This expansion brings the total number of centres to 434, strategically located throughout the emirate, reflecting a commitment to enhancing public services.
Enhanced Access to Eye Testing Services
According to the RTA, the growth of eye testing facilities was underscored by the addition of 100 new centres in the first half of 2026. This expansion is part of a broader initiative to streamline the process of obtaining and renewing driving licences, making it easier for residents to fulfil this essential requirement. In the entirety of 2025, almost 941,000 eye tests were completed, and already in the first half of 2026, over 854,000 tests have been conducted.
Streamlined Electronic Processes
The integration of electronic systems has significantly improved the speed and ease of transactions for users. Individuals can now complete their eye test and renew their driving licence in a single visit. Furthermore, licences can be issued electronically, allowing for immediate addition to a smartphone wallet without the need for a physical print unless specifically requested.
Efficiency in Eye Testing Procedures
The eye testing process in Dubai is marked by precision and efficiency. Results are processed swiftly through a fully integrated electronic system that reduces wait times and effort for users. On average, an eye test takes only 5 to 10 minutes, with results sent directly to the RTA’s systems, ensuring a hassle-free experience.
Importance of Eye Tests in Driving Regulations
Passing the eye test is a fundamental prerequisite for both obtaining and renewing driving licences, safeguarding the well-being of all road users by ensuring drivers have adequate vision. Testing facilities are conveniently distributed across the emirate, including in driving schools and customer happiness centres. Residents can easily access these tests at accredited optical centres or ophthalmology clinics, which boast the latest technology and adhere to high medical standards.
This strategic enhancement of eye testing centres aligns with Dubai’s broader goal of fostering safety and efficiency on its roads while providing seamless services to its residents.
