Unveiling the Beauty of Arabic Calligraphy at Cultural Club

The beauty of Arabic letters takes center stage at the Arab Cultural Club, where a recent workshop, “جماليات الحروف العربية” (The Aesthetics of Arabic Letters), showcased the rich history and elegant artistry of Arabic calligraphy. Led by renowned calligrapher Khalifa Al-Shimi, the workshop provided participants with engaging insights into the intricate techniques and cultural significance of Arabic script, highlighting its enduring allure and aesthetic value.

On Thursday, the Arab Cultural Club organized an artistic workshop titled “جماليات الحروف العربية” (The Aesthetics of Arabic Letters), where calligrapher Khalifa Al-Shimi, the head of the club’s artistic committee, presented explanations and live applications on the linear and formative uses of Arabic letters. Al-Shimi began with a historical introduction discussing the origins of Arabic calligraphy, pointing out the influence of reed pens on its development. He also highlighted the rules established by the masters of this art, which contributed to the evolution and continuity of calligraphy.

Khalifa Al-Shimi emphasized that the stages of development that Arabic calligraphy has undergone have led to extraordinary levels of beauty. He mentioned the influence of the Abbasid calligrapher Ibn Muqla, who laid down general rules for the script, helping to transform Arabic calligraphy into an art form that embodies elements of beauty. The techniques of using the reed pen were discussed as a significant factor in the development and diversity witnessed in Arabic scripts.

During the workshop, Al-Shimi showcased calligraphic pieces of his own creation, demonstrating how he works with each style of script, along with his unique approach. He provided detailed explanations of his calligraphic works, blending calligraphy with artistic formation. Through these explanations, attendees were able to understand how to achieve a balance between aesthetics and creative structure in calligraphic arts.

At the end of the workshop, Al-Shimi created several pieces as gifts for the attendees, allowing them to choose their preferred texts to be transformed into artistic works they could display in their homes. Participants expressed their appreciation for the unique opportunity to learn more about the aesthetics of Arabic letters and how to express them artistically.

It is worth noting that the Sharjah Department of Culture announced it will honor calligrapher Khalifa Al-Shimi at the “Sharjah Calligraphy Forum” during its twelfth session, which will take place next October, highlighting the importance of calligraphic arts and their role in Arab culture.
