As World Environment Day approaches, celebrated globally on June 5 each year, the “Mini Forest” project at Terra in Expo Dubai stands out as a global model for cities facing environmental challenges. This unique project marks a significant milestone in achieving ecological balance in desert urban areas, as the frankincense trees have begun to bloom and bear fruit for the first time, reflecting the success of efforts to create a supportive environment for biodiversity. This forest joins Dubai’s cultural heritage, emphasizing that sustainable solutions can thrive even in the toughest environments.
Achieving Positive Results
The results of the “Mini Forest” project clearly demonstrate how green spaces can grow and flourish even in desert environments. There has been a notable increase in the height of some plants, which have exceeded 120 centimeters after being just 30 centimeters at the time of planting. Furthermore, bacterial activity in the soil has increased by 50%, and root fungal networks have grown by up to 500%. All these indicators reflect the success of the “Mini Forest” in providing a model for efficient water use and enhancing ecological balance in cities.
Strategic Partnership Involving Multiple Entities
The “Mini Forest” exemplifies innovative collaboration between the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and Terra at Expo Dubai. This project highlights the importance of preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the UAE and reflects Dubai’s commitment to developing sustainable urban environments. The forest utilizes the Japanese Miyawaki methodology for urban reforestation, contributing to the revival of natural ecosystems and enhancing biodiversity.
Education and Community Development
The “Mini Forest” serves as an exceptional educational space accessible to the public, facilitating the acquisition of environmental knowledge and interaction. It provides a guiding model that enables neighboring cities to develop similar projects tailored to their specific environmental needs. The “ICOM Dubai 2025” Committee has developed a guide through its mobile application, explaining how to establish mini forests, ensuring the widespread dissemination of this sustainable model.
The “Mini Forest” can enhance cities’ ability to tackle environmental challenges through its innovations in modern technology, such as AI-based irrigation systems, soil sensors, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, making it a globally exemplary model for urban greening projects.
