A significant decision has been made by the International Maritime Organization, urging Iran to halt its attacks that pose a substantial risk to the marine environment of the Gulf. The United Arab Emirates has expressed its appreciation for this critical intervention aimed at preserving the ecological integrity of this vital region. The call to action emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts to address the environmental threats arising from Iran’s maritime activities.
The UAE Celebrates the International Maritime Decision
The UAE welcomes the decision of the Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization, adopted during its 84th session. This decision requires the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately cease attacks and threats targeting commercial vessels and oil tankers, as well as the vital infrastructure of ports and coastal cities. These attacks pose a risk of marine pollution resulting from oil spills, chemical leaks, naval mines, or any other harmful substances.
Concerns Over Environmental Consequences
The decision reflects deep concern regarding the potential for these attacks to result in widespread marine pollution in a region known for its biodiversity. Should such activities continue, there may be long-term negative effects on the marine environment, putting the unique biodiversity of the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman at risk. Therefore, the concerned member states have called for enhanced cooperation in emergency preparedness and rapid response to pollution in the region.
Call for Monitoring Environmental Impacts
The member states have also urged the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization to monitor the negative environmental impacts resulting from Iran’s actions in the region. Dr. Amina bint Abdullah Al-Dhahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasized that this decision recognizes the importance of preserving the marine environment in the Arabian Gulf and its vital role in supporting food, water, and economic security in the region.
Ongoing Efforts to Protect the Environment
For her part, Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, the Special Envoy of the Foreign Minister for Nature Affairs, welcomed the decision. She confirmed that the UAE will continue to collaborate with international partners to protect this important ecosystem, recognizing that environmental security and regional connectivity are inseparable. The UAE welcomes the International Maritime Organization’s call for Iran to stop its attacks on the marine environment of the Gulf by enhancing monitoring efforts and preventing escalation.
