In a notable achievement, the Port of Latakia in northwestern Syria has begun loading its first transit shipment of vehicles coming from the UAE, in preparation for their transportation to European markets. This step reflects the growing importance of logistical activity in Syrian ports and their vital role in connecting the Arabian Gulf with Europe through Syrian territory. The shipment, which includes over 200 cars destined for distinguished countries such as Spain and Belgium, marks a milestone in the port’s history.
A New Step in Port Activity
Mohammad Abdul Rahman, the director of the storage department at the port, told the Syrian news agency “SANA” that “this shipment is the first of its kind on this route.” He noted that it “reflects the strategic importance of the Port of Latakia as a logistical hub in international trade.” This statement underscores the hopes placed on developing the port to become a pivotal point in international transit, opening new avenues for trade exchange.
Activating Transit Movement
In this context, Abdul Rahman explained that the technical teams at the port have efficiently completed handling and preparation operations, enhancing the opportunities to attract more transit traffic. He pointed out that the port’s activity is not limited to transit vehicles but also includes various fuel shipments coming from Iraq and the UAE, contributing to the overall activation of trade movement.
Increased Demand and Economic Returns
For his part, Abdullah Al-Nabulsi, the general director of the Arab Shipping Company, confirmed that the company is seeking to expand its operations by attracting new shipping lines, having introduced Turkish and Chinese lines in recent months. This shift directly contributes to providing alternatives for trade routes affected by global conditions. Al-Nabulsi added that the port has witnessed an increase in demand for transit services, with bookings for more than six ships carrying approximately 4,000 cars to and from Gulf countries.
Infrastructure Upgrades and Strengthening the Logistical Role
Moreover, these operations contribute to generating direct economic returns from ship fees and logistical services, positively impacting the national economy. These developments come after the arrival of the first transit container via Syrian territory from the Port of Aqaba, reflecting the activation of regional transit routes. At the end of last year, the Port of Latakia underwent comprehensive infrastructure and equipment upgrades, enhancing its role as an important regional logistical hub.
On another note, a correspondent from “Syria Now” in Daraa reported that the Naseeb border crossing between Syria and Jordan is witnessing the passage of batches of cars coming from the UAE, which will continue their journey to the Port of Latakia for export to Europe. These activities reflect the increasing importance of the Port of Latakia in enhancing regional trade and transport movement.
