The Dubai Police have made headlines by apprehending a beggar found in possession of 20,000 dirhams as part of their ongoing campaign, “Combatting Begging.” This initiative aims to raise public awareness about the importance of addressing the crime of begging and preventing it effectively. The case highlights not only the issue of begging but also the need for a strategy informed by community involvement and law enforcement.
Details of the Incident
The Dubai Police, under the leadership of the General Department of Criminal Investigation, arrested a beggar who was targeting owners of luxury cars in parking areas and at traffic signals. According to Brigadier Ali Salem Al Shamisi, Director of the Suspicious Cases and Criminal Phenomena Department, the beggar claimed to be in dire circumstances and unable to afford basic necessities. His approach was designed to evoke sympathy from passersby.
Warning from Authorities
Brigadier Al Shamisi urged the community to exercise caution and refrain from engaging with beggars. He emphasized that many of these individuals use deceitful stories and fabricated circumstances to gain financial and material support from the public. They often set up near mosques, clinics, hospitals, and various marketplaces, exploiting community kindness for personal gain.
Encouraging Community Action
The Dubai Police are encouraging residents to assist in the fight against begging by reporting any sightings of beggars to the authorities. Individuals can do so by contacting the call center at (901), utilizing the “Police Eye” service, or reporting any incidents via the Dubai Police smart app and the E-Crime platform for electronic crime reporting.
Supporting Charitable Channels
Residents are reminded that there are official organizations, charities, and associations available to provide financial support to those in need. The police recommend that individuals seeking to help should consider reaching out to these established institutions instead of giving to street beggars, ensuring that assistance reaches those truly in need.
