Arab Theatre Authority Revives Amateur Festival After 12-Year Hiatus

After a hiatus of 12 years, the Arab Theatre Authority has revived the Amateur Theatre Festival, marking a significant milestone in Jordan‘s cultural landscape. The fourth edition of the festival was inaugurated by Jordan’s Minister of Culture, Mustafa Al-Rawashdeh, alongside Ismail Abdullah, the Secretary-General of the Arab Theatre Authority. This revival not only breathes new life into amateur theatre in the region but also serves as a platform for emerging talents to showcase their skills and foster a vibrant artistic community.

A Long-awaited Revival

The return of the Amateur Theatre Festival is a testament to collaborative efforts between the Jordanian Ministry of Culture and the Arab Theatre Authority. This initiative culminated after a comprehensive year-long preparation, which included training a core team of 16 directors and artists from the Ministry. Their mission extended beyond mere preparation; it involved traveling across various Jordanian provinces to inspire, train, and cultivate the formation of theatrical groups. These groups have subsequently produced works that received financial support from the authority, enabling them to present their performances at a festival essential to re-establishing its long-abandoned legacy.

Minister’s Vision

During the opening ceremony, Minister Al-Rawashdeh expressed deep pride in the partnership with the Arab Theatre Authority, emphasizing its significance in promoting cultural dialogue across the Arab world. He stated, “This partnership reflects a commitment to the Arab arts scene, creating a space for intellectual and critical dialogue that enriches the amateur theatre experience.” The Minister also highlighted the festival’s role as a nurturing ground for budding talents, asserting that it builds upon the experiences of established figures in the field. With more university graduates entering the theatrical landscape, the festival’s relevance continues to grow, infusing new energy and knowledge into the craft.

Emphasizing Community Impact

Echoing the Minister’s sentiments, Ismail Abdullah noted that the collaboration with the Ministry aims to ensure the festival serves as a vibrant reservoir for fresh talent in amateur theatre. He pointed out the integral role of amateur theatre in enhancing community development and cultural enrichment across Jordanian provinces. “For us at the Arab Theatre Authority, this is a moment that bridges the gap between dreams and reality,” Abdullah remarked, reflecting on the festival’s journey from conceptualization in 2019 to its eventual launch following pandemic-related delays. The Authority aims to craft a practical and evaluative model that can inspire similar projects in other Arab regions, many of which rely heavily on amateur theatre to sustain their cultural movements.

A Showcase of Talent

This year’s festival features ten distinguished theatre groups from various provinces vying for awards presented by the Arab Theatre Authority. Their participation not only underlines their commitment to the craft but also showcases a promising future for amateur theatre and its practitioners. The President of the Jordanian Artists Syndicate, Mohamed Al-Abadi, welcomed participants, stating, “The current state of theatre is better than in previous eras; the Arab theatre movement is vibrant, and the aspirations of performers are at an all-time high.” He acknowledged the festival as a fundamental pillar in the construction of a robust theatre community, affirming the vital support from Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah, and the Arab Theatre Authority.

On the festival’s first day, the Minister and Ismail Abdullah were honored for their contributions, highlighting the importance of their roles in this rejuvenating project. The festival kicked off with performances such as “The Last Moment” by the Irbid Theatre Group and “The Train” by the Ajloun Theatre Group, both of which displayed remarkable talent in writing, performance, and direction. From February 9 to 14, a total of ten theatre groups will present a range of plays that illustrate the diverse and dynamic landscape of Jordan’s amateur theatre scene.
