Sharjah Ruler Launches Portuguese Version of Omani Maritime History

In a significant cultural event, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, officially launched the Portuguese version of his publication titled “The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman: Events in Chronicles from 1497 to 1757” yesterday. The ceremony took place at the Lisbon Academy of Sciences and was attended by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority. Alongside the book launch, His Highness emphasized the importance of restoring Arabic manuscripts within the academy, reinforcing the value of preserving Arabic cultural heritage and rare documents.

The Essence of Portuguese Influence

In his address during the launch, His Highness highlighted his long-standing dedication to documenting Portuguese history, stating, “Since my election as a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences on October 3, 2013, it has been imperative for me to be an active member of this esteemed institution. I have gathered all documentation relating to Portugal’s history from Portuguese archival centers, dedicating my scholarly efforts to numerous specialized works on the subject.” This dedication culminated in the creation of the expansive “The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman,” which spans 21 volumes detailing Portugal’s presence from their entry into the Indian Ocean to the fall of the Kingdom of Hormuz.

Continuing Scholarly Contributions

His Highness also announced an upcoming release for the Sharjah International Book Fair, set for November 2026. He is preparing a new volume titled “The Portuguese in the Indian Ocean: Events in Chronicles from 1507 to 1748,” which includes 25 volumes. This new work will explore the extensive history of Portuguese interactions in India, East Africa, and various Asian nations. “I promise to continue my research and writing about all matters related to Portuguese history,” he affirmed, expressing his intent to sign copies of this forthcoming book at the Lisbon Academy.

Reinforcing Cultural Ties

The launch was marked by His Highness signing the first copies of the Portuguese edition of “The Portuguese in the Indian Ocean,” donating them to the Lisbon Academy of Sciences and its officials. José Francisco Godrigues, President of the Academy, welcomed the Ruler of Sharjah, recalling His Highness’s visit in 2013 when he received membership status for his contributions to literature and the historical acknowledgment of Portugal’s impact on the Arabian Peninsula and Persia.

A Treasure Trove of Historical Insights

The publication is a veritable treasure trove, encapsulating vital historical events that unfolded in the Sea of Oman over 260 years. It provides a thorough examination of previously unexplored truths, supported by a robust academic foundation. The book, organized chronologically, includes year-by-year accounts and encompasses various essential documents, from letters to unique works by Portuguese authors, many of which are published for the first time.

This Portuguese edition is part of a comprehensive knowledge project spearheaded by the Ruler of Sharjah, aimed at reinterpreting Arab history through a global lens and presenting it accurately in scholarly language. The fundamental goal is to encourage intercultural dialogue and foster an equitable understanding of shared histories. It is a powerful contribution not only to historical discourse but also to the academic community’s understanding of the Arabian Peninsula’s role within global maritime, economic, and cultural interconnections during that era.

As part of this event, His Highness also examined rare Arabic manuscripts held by the Lisbon Academy, which led him to direct the restoration of 90 significant manuscripts, ensuring their display in a dedicated space within the academy post-restoration. These manuscripts, which include various works from the 12th to the 18th centuries, underscore the rich cultural and scientific heritage of the Arab world.

This pivotal occurrence not only marks the launch of an important literary work but also reinforces the strong cultural linkage between Sharjah and Portugal, particularly with esteemed institutions like the University of Coimbra, paving the way for further collaborative efforts to preserve and promote Arabic heritage.
