Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Performs First Successful Robotic-Assisted Breast Reconstruction Surgery in the UAE
In a historic step for women’s health in the United Arab Emirates, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has successfully performed the first robotic-assisted breast reconstruction surgery using the Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flap technique. This surgery is not only a medical achievement but also provides an innovative solution for breast cancer survivors seeking natural reconstruction options without complex surgical procedures.
The Innovative Surgery and DIEP Technique
The DIEP surgery is considered the gold standard worldwide for breast reconstruction, relying on the patient’s own tissue. Despite the significant benefits of this traditional technique, it often required long incisions, which could negatively impact the abdomen and prolong recovery time. However, with the use of robotic technology, the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi team was able to significantly reduce incisions, helping to preserve the surrounding tissue and muscles.
The Expert Team
The pioneering surgery was led by Dr. Rafi Gorounian, Dr. Ahmad Mutalaka, and Dr. Mario Cherubino, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of plastic surgeons, breast surgeons, and nurses. Thanks to the use of three-dimensional imaging and advanced robotic tools, the team was able to precisely and safely separate blood vessels, which helped accelerate recovery and reduce post-operative pain.
Statements on This Achievement
In a statement, Dr. George-Pascal Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, said: “This surgical achievement reflects the level of advancement that healthcare has reached in the UAE. Performing the first breast reconstruction surgery in the UAE using the robotic-assisted DIEP technique demonstrates the progress we have made and our commitment to providing advanced medical care.”
Dr. Rafi Gorounian added: “Robotic-assisted reconstruction allows us to work with greater precision and reduce many of the side effects typically seen after traditional surgery. This achievement represents the future of reconstruction surgeries, offering patients less invasive solutions that minimize pain and abdominal issues.”
Through this pioneering technique, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi aims to set a new standard in breast cancer recovery, providing hope and compassionate care for survivors, thereby enhancing quality of life after healing.
