In a move aimed at enhancing the transportation network in Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed an agreement with Emaar Properties to expand the Burj Khalifa – Dubai Mall Metro Station. This agreement comes at a time when the station is experiencing increased usage, especially during major events such as New Year’s celebrations and holidays, where a significant rise in passenger numbers is anticipated. This expansion will boost the station’s capacity, making it more suitable for the growing needs of users and highlighting the importance of the Burj Khalifa – Dubai Mall Metro Station expansion project.
Details of the Agreement and Station Expansion
The agreement between the RTA and Emaar includes several important updates. The station’s area will increase from 6,700 square meters to 8,500 square meters, which will help improve entrances and pedestrian bridges to facilitate passenger flow. Additionally, new staircases and elevators will be added, and entry gates will be separated from exit gates, providing users with a comfortable and seamless experience.
Increased Capacity
Upon completion of the expansion works, the station’s capacity is expected to increase from 7,250 passengers per hour to 12,320 passengers per hour, representing a 65% increase. The daily capacity after this project will reach 220,000 passengers, marking an important development that aligns with the growing number of visitors and residents in Dubai.
The Vision of Public-Private Partnership
Regarding the significance of this agreement, Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA, stated: “The agreement with Emaar embodies the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, in promoting the partnership between the public and private sectors.” Al Tayer emphasizes that the expansion reflects a commitment to high-quality infrastructure that meets increasing demands.
The Impact of Expansion on Daily Life
For his part, Mohamed Alabbar, founder of Emaar, confirmed that “the expansion of the Burj Khalifa – Dubai Mall Metro Station represents a direct investment in the quality of life and the happiness of people.” This expansion aims to improve the commuting experience and reduce travel time to vital areas in Dubai, aligning with the city’s vision to host major global events.
