Increasing the Minimum Salary for Citizens in the Private Sector to 6,000 Dirhams Aligns with Market Wage Averages
In a move reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing job stability for citizens, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has announced an increase in the minimum salary for citizens joining the private sector to 6,000 dirhams per month, starting from January 2026. This increase is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at aligning salaries with the prevailing market wage averages, which is an ongoing effort to support national employment.
Details of the New Decision
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation will implement the new minimum salary for citizens in the private sector starting January 1, 2026. This decision applies to new, renewed, or modified work permits issued after this date. Additionally, existing establishments that hire citizens before this date will have the opportunity to adjust salaries in accordance with the new minimum, with a deadline set for June 30, 2026.
The Importance of the Increase for Citizens
Khalil Al Khouri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation for Labor Market Operations and Emiratisation, emphasized that this increase is part of a sustainable strategy aimed at improving the standard of living for citizens. The ministry has devised a gradual plan that started with 4,000 dirhams, then moved to 5,000 dirhams, and now to 6,000 dirhams. This step is not only intended to support citizens but also to assist private sector establishments in adapting to market changes.
Measures to Monitor Compliance
The ministry indicates that it will take a series of actions against establishments that do not comply with adjusting salaries to the new minimum after July 1, 2026. Employees whose salaries have not been adjusted will not be counted towards Emiratisation targets, which may affect establishments’ ability to obtain new work permits. This system aims to ensure compliance and encourages institutions to take necessary steps to adjust salaries in line with the new policies.
Collaboration with the Private Sector
Al Khouri praised the commitment of private sector establishments to make progress towards Emiratisation goals and policies. He affirmed that the “Nafis” program provides essential support for institutions, including an online platform that grants access to qualified national talents seeking available job opportunities. The ministry also offers a range of incentives to establishments committed to Emiratisation programs.
Increasing the minimum salary for citizens in the private sector to 6,000 dirhams is a significant step in strengthening the national economy and investing in human resources, signaling a promising future for citizens in the labor market.
